A very NICE ed tour.

I really love driving the Furka Pass. Problem is Davos really doesn't excite me much... so I always either turn around and drive further South or continue driving up North.

Grimsel & Susten are really nice passes. One of my favorites places to drive. Sella(Italy) is also quite nice too. I absolutely LOVE Italy.

My advice to anyone doing ED... is to remain FLEXIBLE>! Its nice to know where you will sleep... but sometimes its also nice to stop at a city or village that you just come across on your travels. Eight hours in the car doesn't sound like much... but I would really urge people to only plan on say four hours each day of driving. You will be wasted at the end of the day - driving over here in Europe. Take your time and enjoy your stay.

The reason why you got flashed was the max speed limit in Switzerland is 120 kph on the Autobahns. But most of the time is more like 100 or 110 kph. And when you pass thru a tunnel on the Swiss Autobahn(and Austria) the speed limit is usually 80 kph. So IF you were doing 135-ish... your in for quite a ticket.

Also... FIY for anyone else... on these Swiss Passes the speed limit is 80 kph! And IF the police catch you driving more than 40 over that(120+ kph) they can TAKE your car. As in, it is now their car!!!

Hi Dack.. Ya, you are right, I was confusing it with the French speed limits. I really thought I was only doing ~7kph max over, because it was raining and there was traffic, but we will see when I get the ticket. Anyway, its just silly that I got nailed by the one camera I wasn't alerted to (although one could point out that there may have been others that I didn't see and the detector didn't pick up). Having said all that, I pretty much stuck to speed limits on the highways and in the towns.

And I agree with you on Davos, now that I have been there :P

edit-Dack in reply to your below post - that's insane that the Sella has a limit of 50kph

I was Traktape, basically a thick clear tape that can be put on the front of your car to try to prevent rock chips (since I clear bra my cars in the USA). I suffered no rock chips, but I can't say that is because the tape protected the car or simply because there were no kicked up stones. There definitely were stones on the road in the French passes (from mini rock slides after the overnight snows) so there was definitely a good chance to get chipped.

Glad you did the car some justice by taking it to the several Alpine passes. I remember feeling the same "shat my pants" feelings you did going up the Jaufenpass on our way to Innsbruck
Hah, I love your picture. It's pretty much a carbon copy Ya, didn't think about the fact that as the cloud layer descends, and you ascend in the passes, you can end up driving into clouds/super dense fog.

Yep, live and learn. Last year on our Sella 1.0 tour... one guy in our group got a ticket. Would you believe the speed limit in ALL of Sella Rounda is only 50 kph! Well... we were driving much faster than that - I must say. And some of the new speed cameras do not "flash" so you do not know you got a ticket until it comes in the mail. And in Italy... they have up to one YEAR to send you the ticket!

Its the price we pay for these wonderful roads and places to drive.

take care,
Dackel

Absolutely fantastic writeup! You were braver than I in attacking and conquering the passes! We went half way up Sella before turning around in very icy conditions!

Great job!

Next time, I do my EuroDelivery in August!!!!

I'd love to get your Google maps itinerary. Great ideas for my 2017 ED

Does that mean that they now have to pay for the bills on the car?

Speed Limits are dumb.

fantastic write up. the dining experiences look worth the trip alone, but so does the car. Congrats on the car, it's beautiful.

looked through the top 100 restaurants, I've only been to Daniel in NY from the list but definitely recommend it if you haven't been! enjoy the car!
