It is OK, but not sure you will have new updates like Castrol Edge 0W30, Mobil1 0W40 etc.

Yep, that doc version is from ISTA 4.32 09/21, since then there was 10 minor releases of ISTA and assume there must have been further updates to that doc.

I guess short of asking here, one can always check the specs on the oil container regarding BMW certification.

Idk if this matters but the M1 0W40 at both Walmart & CT (CDN stock) does not carry LL01 nor API SP. While the Pennzoil 5W40 does list both LL01 & API SP.

Switched to Pennzoil Euro 5w40 and the car runs smoother than the Lubrimoly, for what it's worth.

My local Walmart is now carrying Castrol edge 5w-40 A3/B4 which has 229.5/A40/LL01. If you go to Castrol’s US site - they no longer have 0w40. https://www.castrol.com/en_us/united...-euro-car.html

So for a stage 2 M2 that is not tracked in Houston TX (10f winter, 105f summer) what is the best fit (all are euro formula)
-edge 0w30
-edge 0w40 (I can find on Amazon, no ll01
-edge 5w40 - good deal at Walmart

msmiljanic Does Houston winter temperature reach that low 10F ? That’s like -12C… from edycol’s previous answer to my extreme temperature climate, 5W40 works but best is 0W30 or 0W40. In any case that’s (0W30) what BMW dealers use in my region.

PS: I want to believe that Houston is not cold as here in winter but maybe my knowledge & Wikipedia is out of date

Nice to hear, I’ll be changing to PZE 5W40 though my reference is what the BMW dealer used (0W30 FE). Just waiting for a cool day to do it.

Hi - you are looking at avg temps. There have been a few days in last few years where Houston has seen some extreme cold days. Regardless I don’t think 0w or 5w matters. I was more interested if there were any differences in those three formulas (I have heard 0w40 is now suspect) and if 30 or 40 is better for a stage 2 in hot climates. If the edge 5w40 is good, I’ll get it because it’s at Walmart for cheap

I updated post #678 using ISTA 4.37 (4.4 is latest) & the list contains both Castrol 0W30 & Mobil1 0W40.

Just got another UOA back from Blackstone.

Motul Specific LL-01FE (left) vs Motul Xcess Gen 2 (right).

Motul LL-01FE is some strong stuff!

Oil change!

PZ Euro 5W40 is flowing in my M4! Using Flotool drain pan and oil drain plug remover was mess free! I measured close to 6.3L in the pan & then toped off to 6.5L. The oil measurement at 86C (106 is operating temp) showed halfway between min & max.

ISTA says not to fill more, but it’s odd that it says it’s 0.7L to max…

I'm probably going to go with the mobil 1 0w40 when I do my next change. I have some leftover castrol 0w40 from my previous change, any issue mixing the 2 for a car that's just driven on the street?

Semi related, I'm picking up a 330i on Monday. It'll be almost all highway commuting in Missouri with temps that go from 0 to 100+ throughout the year. I can get the Castrol 5w30 euro oil locally, will that work over the recommended 0w20 or 0w30 that aren't available locally?

UOA for the curious, 7 months and 2.8k miles on my 2020 M2 CS using the factory BMW 0w30. This car is driven mostly for fun so I would categorize these as not easy miles.

That oil's TBN looks like it was obliterated in only 2.8k miles. Cannot imagine what that TBN would be like at 5-7.5K miles.

I also used 0w30 on my G80 M3 xdrive and switched to Shell Helix Ultra/Pennzoil Euro Platinum 5w40. But I feel the Shell/Pennzoil might be a bit too thick for the tight tolerances of the S58 especially on cold start. I have upgraded the turbos on my S58 now to Full Race and so I'm switching back to my tried and true oil which is Penrite 0w40, which I ran on my upgraded Full Race turbos F80 before with great results.

https://penriteoil.com.au/assets/pis...thetic)%20.pdf

I asked for advice on the old formulation of this oil before and
hellokitty said that it was a stout oil. It looks like they have improved their oil specs even more this time and is looking like the perfect oil for my custom tuned S58.

I saw that. I guess my question is moot on the cost after I read this review.

"I've been using blackstone labs for years, tried this once to compare with blackstone labs. The results were identical so that's one thing worth mentioning. Blackstone gives you more details and they also have a human interpret the results and tell you if there is anything to worry about in terms of the problems you many have mentioned to them. Blackstone also has historical data for my car so they can tell me how mine compares with other similar cars with no issues. Wix had same results but they did not flag that the amount of coolant in oil was significant, whereas blackstone listed this as a problem and told me they never see it in samples from others similar cars so they are sure it is not normal. Wix flagged oil's viscosity as the only thing wrong, but Blackstone correctly listed it as normal because they know what the virgin oil's actual (in-use) viscosity is and don't just rely on the viscosity printed on the bottle. BTW, I'm talking about BWM Castrol TWS 10W60 used in BMW M cars."

I have to admit I do like the personal verbatim on the Blackstone...
