What really worries me about doing this is the second photo of post #59...
if you look at the photo, the circular 'dimple' in the CF roof is about an inch away from where you ended up drilling! |

To complement the mechanical wisdom offered here, a bit of a safety precaution: always drill CF with a mask and a vacuum. Our bodies don't get rid of carbon dust, splinters, etc. and there are associated hazards because of that.

I know you are "sealing it up" but I still worry about the underside of the carbon and this carbon fiber DOES NOT LIKE MOISTURE (I know from experience on a rear carbon spoiler). Because once moisture gets into the fiber it can spread over time. Not instantly but over time you will start to see it start to get cloudy. And you will try to buff it out but it is under the surface.

Did anyone measure where they drilled? The little flip ups are 4.5" inches long, is the bolt just in the middle of this? Or is it shifted forward or backward? I currently have a 430 GC as a loaner. They seem to be right in the middle on this car. Is that the same for everyone? I would hate to drill in the wrong place.

Maybe because I was initially looking on the phone, but I didn't notice that you have a 4 series GC. This thread is about F80 M3/M4 with Carbon Fiber roofs that modified their roof to accept roof racks.

So it's been over a year since last post in this thread. Question for people who've done it - How is it holding up? Have there been any issues with water intrusion?

No water intrusion. The roof receptor insert is blind (sealed).

Carbon Fiber Roofs with NO OEM Connection Points for Roof Racks Mounts.
Okay great, but no-one should have to Do-It-Yourself when previously it was available on the BMW M3 (E92) and still should be. You don't want a butcher your new expensive vehicle!
BMW Product/Features Request BMW M4 (F83) Production: 2014 - Present BMW M4 (F83) Carbon Fiber Roof - NO OEM Connection Points for Roof Racks Mounts for a Thule Luggage Rack, unacceptable One missing important feature that is a must for me on the current M4s, is the need for OEM Connection Points for Roof Racks Mounts. The previous model BMW M3 (E92) with optional Carbon Fiber Roof had the OEM Connection Points/Bolts. However, I’m completely disappointed that I have NOT seen the 4-OEM Connection Points for the Roof Rack Mounts on any of the U.S. BMW M4 (F83) with Carbon Fiber Roofs. In person and in a lot of photos, I noticed the mold for the carbon fiber roof insert holes do NOT line up where they're supposed to be, and I can't understand how in four long years, why BMW’s M Division has not fixed this issue. Others have mentioned that you have to order a metal roof to have the OEM Connection Points, but this doesn't make sense because the weight is distributed on the frame of the vehicle, not the top sheet of carbon fiber or metal. Can you can get a Solid Metal Roof without a Sunroof? Can anyone elaborate on this missing feature, what's the deal BMW M? No suction-cups wanted. Last edited by DCG; 09-23-2018 at 09:33 PM.. |

OK guys an M4 lover here. Unfortunately with the current M4 with Carbon Fiber Roof there is NO actual roof mounting brackets/bolts for a Thule Rack. For some reason they did not include that, to me it's a total F-up, because the previous model had that. You can only get the bolts with the Metal w/Sunroof option. I don't care about having a metal roof, BUT I do NOT want a sunroof. I don't get why it's not included and they have not fixed it yet. It can't be a structural thing because it bolts into the frame of the roof pillars.
I just looked at the brand new M5, here is a photograph of the roof mounting/bolt. Can anyone tell me is it actually functional on the new M5. I am working hard to get this standard option on all BMWs on the M4 CF Roof. |

Measured from the front edge of the carbon roof.
12.5 to first hole. 26.75 hole to hole. 39.375 to the second hole. Measured from rear edge of the carbon roof; 12.875 to the rear hole 38.75 to front hole. .375 to .5 outside edge of the gutter to the center of the hole Same distance as the round impression but in a different location. Drill with a 1/8" drill to be sure that you hit the hole then enlarge with a 1/4" drill them a fly-cutter of 1/2" Install BMW part 07 14 7 153 767 with thread lock on threads and a black weatherproof sealant at the top threads to seal for water. you will need 4 of these before you start. 07 14 7 153 767 or this https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1344846 |
