I really disagree.

If that is what you believe, then you have not been reading the threads very well. People who chose the 6MT have not been looking down on the DCT people at all. They have just been giving their reasons for getting a manual.

I got a 6MT because that is what I wanted, not because it is better or I am a better enthusiast. I just personally enjoy the connection with the car that it gives me - even if it is old fashioned.

Moving to the US, I soon realized that manuals were few and hard to come by. Large majority of the folks growing up here grew up on auto's whereas back home manuals were like second nature. It was everyone grew up on. We did not have auto's so manuals were no big deal. So just by that the folks over here who do end up learning how to drive a manual feel a different connection which a large majority of the population here is the US is never exposed to.

Too bad this goes to their head sometimes, start calling themselves purists and they start bashing the folks who don't choose the manuals. To me manuals were always second nature, didn't have to think there was anything special about them.
While I'm not an immigrant, I share similar thoughts about manuals as you do. I first learned to drive vehicles when I was 14 working on a farm in Wisconsin. Obviously, all of the tractors were manuals and some of them took all of my weight at the time just to get the clutch in. We also had an old Chevy farm truck that the clutch cable would routinely fall off and you would have to climb under the truck and re attach it. I know this is not the same thing as having a manual in a sports car, but I know what you are saying. I do not look at a manual transmission with nostalgia and they are just what they are.

I think this goes with a lot of things about cars. Get it equipped the way you want it to make yourself happy. But, it does not mean your choice is superior to others. I very easily could get a manual car and live with it just fine. But, I have a choice and the DCT fits my lifestyle/desires for this car so I made the best choice for me.

I believe that you believe that and don't look down on auto tranny guys. But I've read far too many threads and posts over the years of how DCT/Auto car owners are not real enthusiasts or car guys. I've read various insults to their manhood and other things about it.

I haven't been here that long, but I remember reading a post in what I think was the "Should the M3/4 be offered with xDrive" thread. Somebody said that I bet the same people that would want xDrive are also DCT people. Not the biggest insult ever, but it is the same theme along the lines that they are not true enthusiasts or car guys if you don't have a manual. And in this case consider xDrive/AWD for any reason in a sports car.

i hated DCT in my e92 because half the time it would not come smoothly to a stop, i would always brake, feel a jerk, then it stops...very annoying and uncomfortable...havent driven the new ones enough to know if they updated this software or unit but im now happy to just flick the lever into N and coast to a smooth stop.

also my e92 was towed in twice for DCT issues so im kinda hesitant this go around even though they probably vastly improved it..but the memories still haunt me

I got that when I bought my E46 in automatic. Now that I got a manual F80, some say that DCT is better.

Point is, I get what I want. I have both dual clutch cars and manual cars. They all serve different purposes and were chosen based on what I wanted and would enjoy at that time.

Real enthusiasts appreciate all kinds of cars and transmissions.

I had a DCT E92, have 6MT in my F80, next time it's a toss up which one I get. I love both, for different reasons at different times. Which one I would pick at any given time could be based upon nothing more than which side of the bed I woke up on. DCT is an absolute blast on the track. I'm enjoying driving manual again, but miss having no interruption in power delivery on upshifts. Anyone who think its less suited to performance driving is lying to themselves.

I'm a little less keen on having a conventional torque converter automatic but the ZF 8 speed in the M235i has certainly raised the bar.

It's funny how people think there's some kind of "looking down on the 'other' transmission" vibe...lol...

DCT is the better transmission bar none - amazing piece of technology. You want faster lap times? Get a DCT.

It's all about preference, there isn't a "right" answer. I do prefer 6MT for the feeling that I'm more in control of how the car behaves / performs...even if it's for the worse hahahaha...and figure one day I'll be forced to drive a DCT like sports car.

I have not read all 38 pages of this thread but I've read half of them and I'm surprised that no one has mention the transmission advantage on a turbo car with an "automatic." They hold boost in between shifts, unlike manual transmissions.

With that being said, I went "auto" for my FBO 335i for that exact reason but I am 100% going back to 6MT for my M4 because I miss driving stick every time I get in the car. I can't wait to be back in a manual.
