However on the new B3 BiTurbo the torque is much higher. For me the M3/M4 is a jekyll and hyde car you can drive it in 'Comfort' mode and its similar to the B3 Alpina however in Sport + it becomes another car. What really disappoints me on this review why the Alpina D3 and not the B3, now that that would be more interesting. I can not think of anyone who be considering buying a Alpina D3 would have a M3 on their short list of contenders, although I can with the B3. I have spec'ed up a M4 and B4 and based on having the same options between the two e.g. LSD and the Alpina is becomes more expensive car to buy. Lol, lots of hurt m3 owners.
I knew this would be the reaction once I saw the video. It's just one mans opinion. Enjoy your car.

Why do you think Chris Harris left Autocar? Every review I've seen from them lately is just lack luster and at times boring. Sutcliffe while being a car enthusiast just isn't very exciting. When he drove the LaFerrari he sounded like a Psychologist in the middle of administering a hypnosis session... Really?? You're behind the wheel of a $2 million car almost capable of bending the space/time continuum and you can't for one minute at least seem decently excited about it and drop the dry personality? I was excited to see the review of the LaFerrari, I'm a huge Ferrari fan, and after the YouTube video ended I was like "Really? That's it? It's done?" Evo and /Drive are where the decent internet car reviews reside nowadays, and it may only come to be Evo because of NBCs purchase of /Drive. XCar and Petrolicious are pretty good too though a lot of their "reviews" are just good eye-candy. Winding Road is another good one, especially with their POV test drives. ///Mike Last edited by ///Mikey F80; 07-26-2014 at 05:52 PM.. |

The other disappointing thing in this review is Sutcliffe suddenly going away from everything he loves in the C63 AMG (the sound and the rawness) and heading to the opposite side of the spectrum and loving the D3 for it's quietness and relaxing nature. Why bother comparing that to the M3?? As Estoril Sport said, a better comparison would have been the B3 vs M3. Correct me if I'm wrong but I cannot recall him mentioning anything about HIS thoughts on the sound of the D3 yet this was the main item he was jumping all over in his previous review and was ultimately the reason for him disliking the F8x. I get the feeling this is the exact reaction Sutcliffe wanted (and got).... I actually enjoy reading peoples views as I find them interesting (on the whole) but ultimately, the only real thing that matters is how I feel when I drive a car and to that end, I'm happy I've got the M4 on order so all's good. |

Actually now that I think about it, it's not surprising at all that the boring, dry, put-you-to-sleep Steve Sutcliffe likes the quiet, more boring (IMO), less edgy car. Not sure why I didn't think of this before... This guy would give a coffin with wheels on it 5 stars "because it's comfortable and the padding is 10 notches higher than what you'd normally get"

Have hard time believing the d3 is faster in the track. It's a great car as well but m3 is m3 end of story

Must say that I'm not a fan of Alpina wheels.

Sure Steve Sutcliffe does do some daft comparisons, and the flaws in this review were not good... but I'm not sure we need to be quite building effigies and voodoo dolls of him just yet! In fact the controversy was good to give the D3 some coverage. |

A lot of you would be surprised, no shocked, how well a diesel does on a (smaller) track. You get such a better launch out of the corners that the m cars just dont quite catch you at the end of the straight. Now that im getting a bit of experience at HPDE events. I rarely have trouble keeping 1M and M3 in my rear view.

My 335d is awesome. Not sure why the hate for diesel, as I can 0-60 in as little as 4.3ish, and then get upwards of 40mpg... For like 300k miles... If not for the darn emissions crap causing carbon buildup.
I would ditch the D for an F80 M any day though. |

Carlos Lago himself said when doing straight-line acceleration testing for the F80 M3 that the car was faster every time when NOT using the Launch Control. Faster 1/4 mile times and 0-60 runs were achieved by just mashing the gas, instead of using the LC. So perhaps, in actuality, Sutcliffe was trying to tip the scales in favor of the M3?

lol their handling test is only 1 pass? There seems to be some significant fudging going on in their tests given all actual instrument tests show the M3 is significantly faster in a straight line and on handling. Then again, I'm sure next time he'll find a way to prefer a yugo.

I drove the new M4 and at least about the sound I have to agree with Sutcliffe. The sound is mostly synthetised and the cabin sound is completely different from the outside sound, and is extremely loud, twice as loud as in the new M5. It's like you were playing a car game. After half an hour of driving you wish to have a button to make it stop and just listen to the more muted real sound.
About the differential and "twitchiness" on M3 handling at the limit that Sutclife mentions, I have a heavily tuned 335i with Drexler rear diff (the same one that Alpina uses in their cars) and I can tell you that the Drexler is extremely refined, at the limit there is no twitchiness and the car behaves very predictably, not sure how good it is around the track but for street fun it is absolutely perfect because you feel in control all the time while the grip is phenomenal, even with a lot of torque. |

Obviously the tester is a old guy wanting comfort (D3) not a sport car as in the M3, and he used every chance to prove his biased point.
Oh well, i'm not going to watch his reviews anymore, no point.
