If one chooses to replace, it's only going to happen again. It's the material underneath that "cracks", and it seems almost certainly just from sitting in the seats.
Unless you have a showpiece garage queen that you just want perfect all the time, these emblems will always crack with use (unless materials used change).

Driver side started to show some minor scratches ( 5100 miles-garage parked ), and actually a 1.5mm hairline crack in the plastic ( bottom left ).. so did some preemptive protection and got them cleared bra. .

Not sure how clear bra-ing is going to help in this situation either. But people do like to clear bra stuff...... I'm going to clear bra my deep fried turkey this Thanksgiving. Crunchy.

Time will tell amigos. My driver's side badge doesn't look nearly as bad as previous pics, so will see in 6 months to see if the " inside out " theory is correct. Another theory is that the damage could be from heat generated from the illumination/light every time one opens the door. If that's indeed the case, I agree that swapping new ones will be ineffective.

Yea, I thought I was seeing things, but my M4 is doing the same exact thing on passenger side and I have yet to check my driver side.
Took delivery june 16 2014. 7k miles and garage kept, its not a daily driver and does not sit out in the sun.. I will make it a point to get them replaced under warranty for sure now that there is evidence of this happening to other owners. |

Ok so I finally got approval from the service manager to have the emblems replaced under warranty. He is saying that the whole seat has to be replaced in order to change out those emblems. Is this true? Those of you who have changed out yours, did you have to change out the seats also or do these just pop out? Any feedback would be appreciated.

I believe people have coded the badges so they don't light up, but I don't have that on me. dmnc02 would know the answer better. I don't believe that would make any difference in the cracking however. I think it's just a materials thing that when pressure is put on it (by sitting) they show little micro fractures.

I am not aware of any way of coding them off. They turn on and off with the interior welcome lights, so they might just be on the same electrical circuit.
