Your case is as good as anyone's to get it covered by BMW as there is no way the exhaust was older than 2yrs and you bought the car with it on but still no help from BMW. I know of one person that got theirs replaced and he works for a BMW dealership so not sure how much that played into it. Has anyone else gotten theirs warrantied? |

For example, I installed my MPE when the car was almost new, so my MPE has a ~4 year warranty.

How do other exhaust manufacturers handle their warranties for first or second hand buyers? I thought Dinan, Fabspeed, Magnaflow, and others have lifetime warranties? I haven't researched it a ton, but I don't recall you need a receipt to get cracking or defects repaired.
I was considering a second hand MPE until I saw this thread. I wouldn't even buy one new after reading this, since it will likely crack outside of the warranty period, then I'm stuck with a cracked exhaust. This looks very weak on BMW's part. Its like they knew there would be issues thus the limited time warranty vs. lifetime by other manufacturers.

Most "lifetime" warranties are usually for the original buyer and non transferable...as the need for a receipt. Some are lucky enough to manipulate this situation and make out but nothing is guarantied.
Crack is verified so ball is rolling so I will see what they say......But I am not holding my breath |

So it looks like there are most likely a couple of contributing factors with the cracking. 1) You have a formed neck exiting the can, which means the material is probably slightly thinner and there is residual stress from the cold working. 2) The formed neck is in the HAZ (heat affected zone) of the weld. Typically these areas have lower strength than the base material post welding. 3) There is tensile loading on bottom of that pipe where it exits the can. Materials are stronger in compression than in tension. The 2 pipes are holding up the can and other pipes. 4) Dont know how hot it really gets, but materials also lose strength as temperature increases and the derating can be dramatic depending on the material.
Agree that it blows and in my opinion its a design issue. But really, the fix isnt that bad. Suppose it sucks for those that dont work on their cars (seems to be more here than the old jap forums I was on). My take. 1) Have the cracks welded shut. 2) Have the welder add a gusset from the tube exiting the muffler to the side of the can. This needs to be on the top of the tube so the gusset is in compression. All told should be probably $300-450 to repair including some Ti sheet. |

This thread does seem alarming
I am in the U.K. And I have bought a brand new MPe and had it fitted at the dealership before collection However to think that the exhaust has a design fault and is not being recalled is disappointing I think more pressure from the buying public needs to be put on BMW Question .... does the M4 track car they use for Moro gp use the same MPE exhaust ? |

Damn, I was planning on purchasing the MPE, but not anymore.
Do you guys think BMW will address this issue and have a fix for exhausts being produced moving forward or they are going to keep selling the exhaust as-is? |
