Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

With the new Z/28 edging out the 911 GT3 (subjectively, anyway) in the review posted below, it makes me wonder, does weight really matter that much anymore if the rest of the car is extremely well-sorted?
"Our test car [Z/28] has air conditioning and a six-speaker sound system, bringing it to 3,851 pounds." "If both of these are in my garage, it would be GT3 for the street and Z/28 for the track, every time.” http://www.autoweek.com/article/2014...NEWS/140329817

That new Z/28 has 305's up front and they're Pirelli Trofeos. It doesn't have a choice in its massive cornering ability.

In fairness though, if you can afford a 911 GT3 (or an 80,000 Camaro to use purely as a track toy) you probably aren't terribly concerned about those costs. |

Personally I never understood how BMWs first numbers were so low, especially when you compared them to say a Porsche 991 which is essentially an aluminum chassis. The 991 chassis is designed purposefully for the 991, BMW will always have to make some concessions in weight because the M3/M4 is based on the 3 series chassis, which has a budget in mind.

Weight does matter. Weight transitions in esses and weight transfer under braking will cost time no matter how well the suspension is setup or how much power you have. This is laughable. That Z28 cannot come near half a second of the same lap time as a 991GT3 in a true unbiased comparo. |

And nobody in the car world is really laughing at the Z/28. It might not be for everyone but its performance speaks for itself. But your point about weight is fair as that's what I was trying to get at. I would say that incredible tires can buy back some of the time that extra weight costs.

The quote wasn't representative of which car I'd pick (if I were so lucky as to have that dilemma ).

Wow ....the M4 Convertible weighs in at a porpous 4055 lbs. = WTF? ....the e60m5 weighs less.
That's bad news for the realistic weight of the M4 Coupe ....once somebody actually weighs it. I would expect north of any estimated weight so far. I think the e93m3 weighed in @ 4100 lbs. and its sibling the e92m3 was @ 3600 lbs So that translates to roughly 4050 lbs. to 3550 on the F8x platform. WEAK |

The curb weight stated on BMW USA's web site is 3,530 lbs for the coupe and 3,540 lbs for the sedan (both manual, no options). Not bad considering that the curb weight of the M235i is listed at 3,505 lbs (manual, no options). |

RE: the z/28, I look at it this way. Would the car be more fun to drive if it were 3,000lbs instead of nearly 3,900lbs? I think the answer is pretty obvious. M |

(DIN curb weight is with 90% fuel, fluids but NO driver) US curb weights include driver, 100% fuel and options to be expected installed on more than 33% of the cars sold. US curb weight will therefor be higher than DIN curb weight. Buy an M4 with manual transmission and no options that add weight and your car should weigh in at 3300lbs without the driver |
