I thought of another route for you... IF you go to Kufstein and stay at Hotel Kraftquelle Schlossblick... maybe drive further South to the Gross Glockner Pass. I prefer to drive that pass from the South to the North.(see my Google link bellow). Helmut Pfeifhofer's private Porsche Museum in Gmünd. Gmünd is where the first 48 Porsches were made. Just down the street from the museum is the old saw mill, where the production of the cars were built. It's next to the town's soccer field. Hotel Kraftquelle Schlossblick --> Porsche Automuseum Helmut Pfeifhofer, 9853 Gmünd in Kärnten, Austria --> Großglockner Hochalpenstraße https://www.google.de/maps/dir/Hotel...2896!3e0?hl=en

IF you drive to the South entrance and travel North on Grossglockner... This is a nice hotel. Wastlwirt**** Romantik Hotel & Restaurant Poststraße 13, 5582 St. Michael im Lungau Austria www.romantikhotel-wastlwirt.com I stayed at "a" Post Hotel(There are many!!) near Gmund years ago... I can't seem to find the hotel though. It was 25 minutes away near Gmund. After touring the Pfeifer museum... I decided to drive the GrossGlockner. It was a GREAT spur of the moment decision! Porsche uses this hotel for their ED tours... You can even rent a 911 or other P-cars at this hotel for the day(not that expensive either!). It is a more expensive hotel though, about double the price. Defereggental Hotel & Resort Bruggen 84, 9962 St. Veit in Defereggen Austria www.hotel-defereggental.com

Been there, done that, have the t-shirt. It's hard enough driving with a small bunch of cars. But when you get past seven or eight car's... ut gets very hard for all of us to stay together and stay "safe". I like to travel with friends and people I know well. And in a small group. In the past when we had 27 cars at Stelvio... I just about lost my mind trying to keep everyone together on the pass. Dackel

Just posting this AWESOME blog on Alpine drives here in this thread. Fellow forum member: caustics made this really awesome blog on Alpine driving routes. His drone shots are amazing! Most are passes in Switzerland... but some are near Munich.

Adventure Drives - European Luxury Roadtrip...
A pretty decent video on ED tours. Most of these places anyone can visit. Most of these places I have covered before in my ED Museum guide. JF and "Super Speeder Rob" put together a nice video from last September...

Thanks for sharing Dackelone
I've seen it entirely and it's incredible when I think that I've been in touch of so many of the places view over the videos during my trips to Austria/Switzerland and Italy. Amazing! It feels I need to get back as soon as possible. Actually I'm planning something towards there. Would love to have some help of you master guys here. Let me know what you think. Best, Joao

Hi there, again :-)
As usual, on my way to Munich next month. This time, my holiday is on the last week of September so I'll have the chance to finally visit the October fest. I think I'll stick with the Lambo trip that I did a year and a half ago. The only thing that I'm still not sure about is whether I'll do kesselberg in the first day and Kufstein in the second to be able to visit the Bernhard´s Stammhaus restaurant or skip it and do these roads as last time (first day (Monday) Kufstein and second day kesselberg). I remember last time, you've suggested another good restaurant on the way to Kufstein. Am I wrong? Thanks in advance! |

Just be aware that most of the hotels in Munich triple or quadruple, their normal hotel rates - during October Fest. Quote:
Kesselberg ??? Is that the road near Frankfurt ? Did you mean Tatzelwurm Strasse ? ...in Bavaria ? I really like the Tatzelwurm Strasse - but it's not very long. The road around Hitler's Eagle Nest.. Berchtesgaden... is quite nice. It's known as the Panoramastrasse or the Rossfeld Panorama Strasse https://www.google.de/maps/dir/Obers...!1m0!3e0?hl=en Also take note... on September 28th thru 30th, there will be a Hill Climb Race on the Rossfeld Panoramastrasse - so the road will be closed, but you can go watch MANY classic race car's race up the mountain. Walter Röhrl will be there! More info here... www.rossfeldrennen.de/en Another nice town in this area is: Bad Reichenhall Lots of great curvy roads in the heart of Bayern. The world's oldest cable car lift is also in Bad Reichenhall. Predigtstuhl-Bahn is over a 100 years old! Predigtstuhl-Bahn www.predigtstuhlbahn.de IF you do travel down into Southern Germany... in the Berchtesgaden area... there is this really nice hotel I have stayed at a few times. I really liked it. The food(buffet) was really good too. Great views from the hotel & the breakfast terrasse too! This place is kind of pricey(140 to 280 euros per night) but really worth it. Sometimes they have deals going on IF you prepay for the rooms. Berghotel Rehlegg Holzengasse 16 -18, 83486 Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden Berghotel Rehlegg The wonderful restaurant, inside the hotel... Just a few meters from the hotel... the famous Ramsau bridge... I would check with Bernhard´s, to make sure they will be open when you are visiting. They are only open from: Wednesday to Saturday!! Bernhard´s Stammhaus - Restaurant & Hotel Kufsteiner Straße 10 | 83080 Oberaudorf info@bernhards.biz opening hours.... Wednesday to Saturday from 6:00 pm. to 11:00 pm. Café Winklstüberl Open 8am until 9pm Every Day!! Guestrooms incl breakfast for 25 euros. Every cake is hand made with Love! This place is so awesome!! and just outside of Kufstein is one of mine all time favorite hotels... Hotel Kraftquelle Schlossblick Embach 1, 6320 Angerberg, Austria www.schlossblick.at Castle Mariastein, where the hotel gets it's name: Schlossblick means Castle View. Hope this helps you out. Ohh yeah! Now I remember. Yeah sure the Kesselberg can be done in a day. A nice drive too. I think you will love it. This is the mountain road that the Auto Unions and MB Silver Arrows raced on in the 1930's. It's also the site of the first fatal car accident in 1888(?). I remember some of us car guys had pulled over to take a break... and we noticed a plague marking the accident. Quote:

Kufstein is about 37 minute drive from Cafe Winklstuberl. Take the back roads to Kufstein and not the Autobahn. https://www.google.de/maps/dir/Caf%C...!3e0!5i1?hl=en Maybe take a detour and drive the TatzelwurmStrasse... from Bayrischzell to Brannenburg. The road turns into a private toll road... the fee is only four euros. It's kind of cool. Just before Brannenburg is a train that you can take to the top of the mountain there. Wendelstein-Zahnradbahn. It's one of those trains with a gear rack & pinion gears/rail so that the train can climb the steep mountain. I've never done it but I always think one of these days! https://www.google.de/maps/dir/83735...2414!3e0?hl=en Quote:
Order: "kalbsschnitzel mit cornflakes panade". Yum Yum!! The Festung Kufstein is just an old fortress that is also a museum. No food served there. But interesting to look around or just take pics from the street level. Quote:

Tiroler Hof also serves other local dishes all made fresh, daily. The place is simple & charming. But really great food. Here are some of their dishes from their english website page.... https://www.tirolerhof-kufstein.at/e...ng/restaurant/ I'm sure you will eat well while on your tour. Btw... Have you ever been to Brenner Operngrill in Munich ? It's located near the Four Season's Hotel and it is also a great place to dine. I'd probably rate the Brenner highest among the restaurants I have mentioned before, in this thread. The Brenner Operngrill seems like a great place to eat in Munich. Do I have to order a seat before I get there? I do not like to pre order seats when I'm abroad as I can't tell in advance whether I'll be available at that time.
When I hang around in the Marienplatz, I usually eat at Haxnbauer. Will love to try something new :-) Thanks Last edited by kingikra; 08-27-2018 at 01:36 PM.. |

Went today to see what's the October fest is all about. It is indeed an impressive production. It is huge and attracts so many people from around the world. I've never seen such a big event that last for more than one day (a week). It's mostly a very happy event (today I've seen a young guy that throwed up his inner life). People are drinking, singing in the streets. I wish I could come here when I was in my 20's. I know that this festival has no age upper limit but the world belongs to the young ones :-).
Will report back concerning my 488 spider trip when I'll be back home. Thanks, Dackel for all the help! |

Just landed a few days ago. As always it a pleasure. Haven't been to Kufstein so hadn't had the chance to visit the tiroler hof Kufstein restaurant. On top of that I had a sever GPS issue so hadn't been to cafe Winklstüberl but the Brenner Operngrillis indeed a fancy restaurant. I ordered the Entrecote and the meat was of good quality, although this is not an American steak
As I mentioned earlier, I visited the October fest and it was a great experience. Huge production. I salute the guys who arranged this event. As for the driving the car, it was amazing except the GPS issue (Unfortunaly, this car's windows had this material that protects from the sun but blocks GPS reception). Here are two videos of the great view along the way: and another one with some spirited driving included Thanks a lot, Dakel for your time! |

Hi Dackel,
I'm on my way to Munich today. As in last year, I'll be there in Easter Monday which is a disaster driving wise. Hopefully I'll have some open roads on the way to Kufstein. But I want to ask something else, what can one do in Munich on a Monday Easter? Where do people hang out in this occasion? Thanks |

Since the weather has been really great this week... I would bet that the park in Munich(it's called: Englischer Gartens) is filed with people. There you can walk, people watch, ride a bike or even ride the surf! In the heart of the English Gardens is the Chinese Tower(Turm) which has a very nice beer garden run by the Hof Brau Haus. The food and beer and ambiance is delightful here. There is a band that plays up inside the Chinese Tower all the while. It's also very common to see people in the park completely naked. It's sort of a tradition there in the park/Englischer Gartens. Not everyone, but you do see it often. Always cracks me up with some old grandpa rides his bike naked in order to get a sun tan/burn. Englischer Garten... Eisbachwelle(surfing) quite close to the American Consulate... https://www.google.de/maps/place/Eis....5877778?hl=en https://www.google.de/maps/place/Chi....5921023?hl=en And there is always the downtown area... Alte Peter's Church tower entrance is here... the view is quite nice... but it's a hike up those circular staircase... 91 meters high... 306 steps... https://www.google.de/maps/place/Tur...1.575524?hl=en Of course my all time favorite place is taking a 40 minute drive South to the Café Winklstüberl. https://www.google.de/maps/place/Caf...11.95357?hl=en Btw... I recently found this jewel of Bavaria near the Austrian border(quite close to Kufstein)... Gasthof Schneiderwirt. The hotel rooms were quite nice but the restaurant across the street was really amazing! And on every Wednesday they have a live Bavarian band playing music. I really liked this beer garden. Gasthof Schneiderwirt Hauptstraße 8, 83131 Nußdorf am Inn You could also take the cogged train to the top of the Wendelstein mountain. It's in Brannenburg. The last train is around 2pm until summer season starts up in May 2019. Wendelstein-Zahnradbahn (Wendelstein Rack Railway) https://www.google.de/maps/place/Wen....0928788?hl=en You can drive past the Wendelstein-Zahnradbahn to the end of the road, make a RIGHT and stop at the wooden haus to pay a 4 euro toll. You can take this road all the way into Kufstein the "back way". Just be careful as you enter Austria... the Polizei sometimes hide if the woods/bushes with a laser pistol for "sorfort kasse" which means you have to pay on the SPOT. They do take credit cards though! Really. The B307 is a really nice curvy road. It's also known as the Sudelfeld Strasse. Here is a video of a few of our "guys" driving from the Brannenburg/Wendelstein At 07:15... is the LEFT(where the yellow van/car is coming from) which takes you down to the Feuriger Tatzlwurm - Hotelresort and the waterfall. Or drive straight ahead and this road will lead you to Bayrischzell & then LEFT to Kufstein. https://www.google.de/maps/dir/Wende...8237!3e0?hl=en You could also stop by the Feuriger Tatzlwurm - Hotelresort. It is also a nice hotel, although a little pricey for what it is. https://www.google.de/maps/place/Feu....0842099?hl=en I have had lunch & dinner there and it's quite delightful. The food and atmosphere is really very nice. Anyways... what I like to do is park at the hotel(free parking, or just down the road - there are parking areas) and walk up the road to the hotel and follow the signs for the Wasserfall Tatzelwurm https://www.google.de/maps/place/Was....0824849?hl=en The waterfall... the tunnel is part of the private toll road coming from Brannenburg/Wendelstein. Normally I drive start onto the B307 but at the first intersection you can turn LEFT and drive 400 meters to the Feuriger Tatzlwurm - Hotelresort. Then afterwards double back and turn LEFT back heading to Bayrischzell & then Kufstein. You can also drive further down the road from Feuriger Tatzlwurm - Hotelresort towards Kufstein... but it's not as nice of a curvy twisty roads as the B307. Sudelfeld Strasse. There are TWO areas at the waterfall to look at the falls. An upper and lower. Bring good hiking shoes too! Best regards, Dackel
