Any 2015/6 owners running CarPlay without hardware conversion?

So Im interested in upgrading software but without getting hardware upgrade with new screen to have CarPlay on my 2016 model...this possible???

I know that it is possible to run on the first NBT EVO units with 4.0/5.0 (I believe these were MY 2016, not MY 2015) but not recommended. It certainly runs better on the later units with 6.0 and more memory.

This was on an early 2016 retrofit unit.

How stable was iDrive after the upgrade? did you lose any functionality with the upgrade?

I have a 2015 M4 and just installed the BimmerTech CarPlay MMI in an NBT (non EVO) car. It works great. You activate the system via the #8 memory button. Today I had Waze going while listening to iHeartRadio and a text came in which was read to me with a thump on the iDrive controller. Siri works as expected and is activated with the Voice button on the steering wheel. Pretty cool and convenient.

The only caveat is that you have to disable the Bluetooth connection to the car and use a wired connection. The system will not work if both are active and the BT MMI requires the wired connection.

The install is straightforward assuming you're inclined to do such things. It took me a couple hours end to end. Now that I know how everything comes apart, if I were to do it a second time it would take less than an hour.

I have a early 2016 that came with an NBT EVO headunit but ID4 software. Did a full hardware swap and bought it from codemybimmer. Works great and in the process to upgrade the istep to a version to get full screen CarPlay. Haven't lost any functionality that I know of.
