I had the noise looked at by a BMW master tech and he is convinced it is NOT wastegate.

Thoughts?
Its 100% the waste gate if it is the same noise I had. Confirmed this myself. Doesn't mean anything is wrong, just the design of the waste gate flaps. I noticed mine after downpipes. Never affected the way the car drove at all.

Just to get a comparison/baseline on noise if it's the same as yours this is what mine does.

When the engine is cold no noise at all whatsoever. After it heats up properly, especially on hotter days after a few hard pulls I start hearing what can be described as keys rattling for a split second at 1800-1900 rpms in any gear. I can also reproduce the noise constantly while brake throttling and holding it at that RPM in 1st gear. Is this the same phenomenon that everyone is experiencing?

I isolated my noise to my rear oe dp, put a stethoscope on it and can hear it clearly - could also be wastegate rattle coming through dp though

I have a spare dp to swap over hoping for a quick diy fix, but failing that I'll be off to dealer

That's nothing like my car sounds. Yours is a very low frequency sound, mine is high pitched almost like keys and ONLY under load at 1800-1900 RPM

Waste gate Rattle

Seems like this guy figured it out on facebeook and it is fixed.

At least in his case which was a popular problem and fix!

Thanks for the heads up, I read the thread, unfortunately that is not an avenue I am willing to take. I refuse to have to tune my car to get rid of this sound.

No problem. Guess I assumed you guys were tuned. Hope it gets figured out. Appears that changing the DPs make it worse. This change also affects how the turbos will now act. Interesting that a tune has fixed it in this case. Strange!

I am continuing to have these noises that appertto be wastegate rattle after DP install. Has another sorted out this via tune or adjustment of the DP’s? It’s irritating enough that I am not enjoying the car...second f80...first with the noise. 4K miles.

You guys seriously cant enjoy the car because of sound? All BMW turbo cars have rattles similar to what we experience, even the brand new b series motors make the noise.

Mine has made this noise for about 5k miles after I modded it. I just hit the accelerator harder and dont worry about it.

Just recorded this little clip on my car. Circa 40k miles. Stock original turbos.

Seems the turbo itself needs replacing as the only real solution. Tightening the wastegate actuator arm may help but also may take the actuator out of scope.

The WG actuator tolerance is only 2-3 threads. If you adjust it out of spec, you’ll throw a drivetrain malfunction, and there’s a chance that Ista won’t even register the range so you can fix it. That’s why the ewg’s come pre-assembled and marked.

Also, you wouldn’t replace the turbo because the WG assembly is loose, you would just drill/weld a replacement flapper valve similar to this:

Yeah so as I said then - will take it out of spec if adjusted.

If the turbos are coming off my car, they’ll be being replaced for more power 👍

I wasn't correcting you, just clarifying for others.
