Gonna need more details than "M4 of my friend after installing CBC"
Not trying to be a d*ck but if you're gonna show us a major malfunction like that, you need to provide all details including install, car's tune, engine mods, etc.

I'm not going to scare anyone or prove to anyone, this was not the purpose of my post, I just got scared when I saw what happened to my friend because I was thinking about installing the Crunk Hub myself, the car that broke down is M4 2017, stage 1, 520 HP, now I'm thinking hard about what to do ...... there are so many different pieces of information , everyone writes something else ...

I'll go out on a limb here and say that some guy named Bob who drills into your perfectly balanced crankshaft with a rusty drill bit is an unwise decision no matter how you slice it.
Shit like this keeps tuner shops in the biz... |

I am also not convinced to install it ... that's why I wrote here to get to know the opinions of other users ... I have mixed feelings ... I wonder what the real percentage of these failures in the S55 engine is

As I stated in my post. You’re not going to find a magic answer here or anywhere else. Do it because you feel it’s your peace of mind not because someone on the internet told you or some shop who’s business it is to sell and install these things.
Now if BMW makes a statement about it, different story. Right now you’re going to read mixed responses about why ou do or don’t need it. Again, do what makes you sleep better at night. No one here is going to buy you a new engine out of good will because something happened to your car. |

In my fantasy life there is a stroker S65 swap on my F8X lol. But given how reliable these engines are relatively speaking, I don’t know that I’ll ever get the chance

2-3 months later, BMW started campaigning for a RB recall with early model S58s, and have continued to do so with late model S58s. In fact, they've been very active with safety recalls ever since the dismissal of the class action lawsuit... Recall Reference: https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1777823 The N54/N54/S55 friction disc failure for sure has been discussed internally, or we'd be seeing the same crank hub design with the B58. They will likely handle the S55 situation similar to the S65, so I wouldn't hold my breath on a recall or statement on this. |

My mate who is a mechanic at BMW fo years told me that he has only seen 2 that have failed, both highly tuned. If it’s kept stock, he never seen an issue and also said, that if that was to happen to a stock car, probably BMW would honour and replace it.
The real question is, why do people feel they need more power than it already has, on a car that is notorious for being hard to put all the power down anyway? |

I was left a little under-whelmed with the stock power (came from an AMG C63 with long tube headers and such). Went stage 1 BM3, and man what a difference, is totally how the car should have come stock.
Added the crank bolt capture for "cheap insurance", more than anything a placebo for my own sake, and call it a day. Love how the car drives, and if you treat it with a bit of respect (no repeated launch control launches, kicking down from 6 to 2 repeatedly etc, then that mitigates the chance of a spun hub happening. Give it some abuse, real good chance it's gonna be just fine, but can also increase the odds of something happening as well... End of day it's a total crap shoot, do what you feel gives you confidence in the vehicle to stay whole in the manner you plan to drive it. No one knows these things but yourself.. |

I got my M4 in December and have been looking at this issue as well. Planning on keeping the car stock. Seems like there are a few opinions about it.
Do we have any forum members that have had this failure on a none tracked stock vehicle? |

There's a ton of information out there that should make you feel extremely confident that this is not an issue for stock engines. BMW would have fixed this a long time ago if it was; I know damn well they do not want to pay for ruined engines.
Every time I've seen somebody with a stock engine that had it happen, they either don't know if the car was previously tuned or it's an account with 1 post. The production numbers for S55s is HUGE. The crank design is STUPID but it will handle stock power. Don't even think about it. Use kick down all you want. |
