Pfc pads clanking when braking

I installed pfc 08 front brake pads and when braking in reverse the pads clank as they shift in the calipers and then clank again when braking when driving forward. Is this normal for the pads to be shifting in the calipers like this? I've seen another car that did the same thing but I thought he just installed his incorrectly. Braking performance and sounds are normal outside of this clanking only when the pads shift in the calipers.

This is quite common for aftermarket pads. Even my stock pads are doing the same thing now. I wouldn't be worried.

It’s not an issue and is common. The backing plate on the pads are not as wide as the pad guides on the caliper so the pad shifts/rotates under braking. The noise comes from the pad hitting the guides.

Don't worry your pads were installed properly. When you took off your stock pads, you will notice there are large dog ears at the top of the pad. These are there to prevent the clanking your hearing when going from forward to reverse or reverse to forward. The standard public would not put up with clanking every time the driver their car so that is why they were added. Since PFC's are considered track pads or aftermarket pads, I guess they assume you will tolerate the clanking because of being at the track pad or aftermarket.

It's normal for PFC08/11 and any other brand race pads to make some knocking sound.

My PFC11's make clanking/knocking sounds even in forward motion (e.g. braking when coming to a stoplight). Confirmed this knock-back is typical and expected for a pad like this by a reputable BMW shop that performed the installation

They also squeal almost all the time (except when really hot) so may consider swapping out pads for street use. Is that your experience as well?

Yes the clang should only happen once each time you change directions and use the brakes. So once you go forward and they clang, they should not do it again until you go in reverse which then they will clang since the pads are shifting.

Most race brakes squeal like crazy when they are not hot. That is because they are not in operating temperature range. Honestly, changing pads on an f80 takes me like 5 min max per wheel. If you google search, there a step by step videos which explain exactly how to do it. Very simple
