I agree with all the comments on the M3 but the M4 certainly outshines the M3 in terms of sales.

Is that true for the CS level? I honestly have no idea, but it's more relevant to the OP's question.

IMO they even made the M4CS more of a track car, because who would track a 4 door car unless that was their only option?

If you own an M3 and don't have kids, cool I guess, but coupes>sedans if you don't have human cargo IMO.
honestly i would have to agree with this. as a sedan, the M3CS is a bit pointless. you get an M3 because you want practicality. the M3CS has four doors but the GTS center console removes the HVAC at the rear. how stupid is that. yes id rather have my baby die of heat stroke in the back because racecar.

F8x civic/zcp : F80 hands down
F8x CS/GTS: F82 M4 easily

Interesting thread, as I've asked myself the same question a little while back.

I think it boils down to the fact that this is mainly an American forum and that the M3cs was aimed particularly towards the American market. About half of all M3cs have been slated to the US and were "dumped" all at once over just a few months.

On the other hand, the M4cs has been on the market outside North America for over one year, but have only started to trickle on our shores since last September. I wonder how many M4cs have actually landed on North American shores thus far, but I'm pretty sure it is significantly less than the M3cs. Hence the much lower North American deliveries. I am pretty sure the majority of M4cs owners on the forum are from outside the US.

The M4cs is slightly more biased towards track performance with a bit more focus on weight reduction and a stiffer suspension.

There's more difference than that. The entire door cards are different on the CS, which forego with the storage bins, large armrests, solid door pulls, LED ambiance lighting, metal trim and speaker grills and have less sound deadening. The M4cs also has the lower-end HiFi sound system that weighs less. The M4cs front seats have alcantara bolsters for the thighs and flanks which hold occupants better in place during spirited driving (read track) than the full leather seats.

PS: Just to nitpick, it's not the door latches that are straps (like on a Porsche GT3) but the door pulls.

It depends in which market. The M3cs production volume was limited to 1200 units of which 607 went to the US. I doubt that many M4cs will land in the US. Further, the M4cs has no limited production numbers and has been put to market over a year before the M3cs in the rest of the world outside North America.

SO regarding sales volumes:
US: M3cs > M4cs
ROW: M4cs > M3cs

I think its a forum demographic issue. I suspect that there are more married with kids here then young singles or, old boomers (like me). Hard to justify a coupe if you haul 3+ a lot. That said, sedans shout old man to me.....

Like other have stated, the M3 is a really neat package that is a 4 door with space for kids or whatever. And it’s a sport sedan that can be had with a 6spd. I had an M4 DCT and it was great but traveling with 2 minions meant the kids were really close together. The M3 gave them more room and it makes longer road trip more relaxing. I opted for a 6spd in the M3 and I have no regrets. If I lived in a major city, I may have opted for the DCT as I despise bumper to bumper traffic with a manual. I do like the body of the M3 more than the M4, however M3CS vs M4CS if I had disposable income to have a weekend car (at that price point) I would consider the M4. I think the interior of the M4CS appeals more to me than the M3CS. I’m not a fan of the two-tone seats. Both are great in their own way.

Interesting perspective. For reference, I purchased my M3 sedan before I got married, and with no children. Here's why:

Ever since I started driving at 16, I have never owned a car with 2 doors that had more than 2 seats. I've either owned 2 door 2 seaters or 4 door sedans. Aside from the Dodge Challenger, 4 seater coupes just aren't fun for rear passengers. It's annoying for all passengers to move seats to put 2 people in the back, and unless you're shorter than 5 ft 7 inches, hunching over in the back seat or leaning forward without back support to avoid hitting your head on the rear window gets old after about high school age.

As for the old man argument, an automatic base Corvette screams old man to me much more than a sports sedan like a M3. I've always just been in the mindset of if you ever want to take more than 1 additional passenger and want everyone to enjoy the trip, just get the second set of doors. Otherwise you find out pretty quickly that you're parking your car and taking someone else's, or driving separately so you can enjoy the drive alone. Neither option is as fun

Anyone have a clue how many are made of the M4CS?

I think we should all just agree that the M3 is the better looking of the two variants and move on

Quite frankly the m3cs was SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than the m4cs. I drove both and while the m4cs was a pube hair better, 99.9 percent of the time it would be exactly the same. Just because I have the money doesn't mean I can't opt for the better deal.

But if I was looking for a sedan specifically, there's really only a handful that are aimed at the same market as a M3 CS.
Bingo!

Plus, I think part of the issue here is that the CS is the top trim level for the M3, while CS is not top trim level for the M4 (GTS).

If the majority of this forum are M3 owners, it's because we didn't like the M4.

I don't have kids. My friends don't have kids. We all agree the m3 with it's flared rear arches and proportions just looks better to the eye. The performance difference is negligible.

But you can find much better deals on M4s

Case in point, another forum member with an M4cs and he’s not in North America .

As opposed to the M3cs, I don’t believe there’s an actual limit on total M4cs production volume.
