Bumping - trying to see if I got a good deal on my plan buying it early.

Anyone in a 2015 or 2016 coming off manufacturer warranty and bought an aftermarket extended warranty? Price and terms?

Recently bought a 2015 M4 who's warranty will be up in 3 months (currently at 30k miles) and was shopping around. Best I was quoted so far was a 5 year / 100k mile at the odometer, "Platinum" or bumper-bumper level warranty for $4300 from a BMW dealership with no deductible if I go to them for service ($100 deductible if I go to any other BMW). Worst I was quoted was 1 year unlimited mileage for $6700 for a "Gold" or second to best level warranty with a $150 deductible. Most of the ones I've seen all have the same exclusionary items for the bumper to bumper warranty and are around the $4500-$5000 range for that kind of terms/mileage around the NY/NJ area. All of these warranties are aftermarket warranties, provided through a BMW dealership.

I recommend the BMW factory extended warranty. I purchased a 2/75k on my 2013 M6 for $5200 from a Marryland dealer (they discounted it by $250 and Maryland has no sales tax on extended warranties). It was the Platinum or bumper to bumper, $50 deuctible. Car was in 4 times to dealer for warranted repairs, they installed over 4k in parts alone, and labor would be easily 5-7k, plus always got a nice loaner (X5 for 9 days last time) so i saved a lot of money. Will do the same when my new to me 2016 M4 gets close to warranty expiration at end of 2019

I was quoted easycare bumper to bumper with a 300$ deductible 6y from warranty purchase date 85k odo miles for just over 4k$. The price was low because my car is only 1 year old and less than 20k miles. The actual 'extended period' of this warranty was +3 years and +35k miles on top of the factory.

I decided to not go this route because the deductible was so high and I expect that most minor repairs through an indy shop would not yield the 4.2k$ worth of warranty over the 3 years also taking into account the high deductible.

MaxCare Warranty(3rd party warranty from CarMax)on my 2015 M4 with 46k miles was $3100. Terms were 5 years from purchase date or 100k miles on car(whichever comes first) with a $500 deductible. Never had to use it but reviews seem pretty good and I can take to BMW dealer directly for any claims.

Best warranty out there and car max prices are ok (not great) on these cars... I test drove an m4 with 35k miles last week and was offered 4 years and 125k odometer reading for 3400 with 500 deductible. Seemed very fair as it's bumper to bumper

Is an extended warranty a must-have for these cars? Going to buying a used M3 soon and want to know if I should also be shopping warranty.

There's several threads that highlight how reliable these cars are; a relative minority I've seen listing serious issues.

For my part, I wanted coverage while I was still making payments and because I hope to keep this car for tens of thousands more miles (at just under 26K now and using it as a DD). I feel better having the bumper to bumper extended warranty. When I sold my 335is to buy this I cashed out the unused balance of my extended warranty. Never made a claim.

Any options for Canadians for extended warranties? Do most service through the dealer after the warranty period, or go to mechanics specializing in German cars?

Same here. I've got a '16 M3 CP with 9500 miles on the odometer. I've been thinking about an extended warranty (1 year left on the manufacturer's warranty), but not sure if it's worth it given the low milage on my vehicle.

My Max Care warranty on a 2004 Audi covered $16500 in claims over 1.5 years. It was back by Assurant (same company that USAA uses).

My dealer charges $256 an hour for M car labor (at least on my M6, don't know wwhat they charged on my M3). Service guy told me not all warranty companies will cover, but factory extended does cover. Assuming, on average, a 25% gross profit margin on a 4k warranty policy means, on average a buyer will have at least 3k in claims. So the real gamble is 1k not 4k....

Thanks for the info! I'm really stuck on this. Found an awesome 2015 that has everything I am looking for but the mileage is 57K. Since I plan to keep it until the wheels fall off but also finance it, I am just really torn over picking this car up for a low price and adding a warranty or waiting for something that may be a bit more expensive but still has some factory warranty. Also with the amount of miles I put on cars, in 5 years I am looking at tacking on at least 90K more miles.

Any advice out there?

Factory warranty is only available if purchased before regular warranty expired. Also, check if 1200 mile service was done +/- 500 miles. Cars that weren't are not eligible for factory extended warranties or cpo. Find a good indy shop, if you buy one out of warranty get a good ppi and make seller fix before sale any issues.

without sounding too bias I would strongly suggest you have some sort of warranty past factory if you plan on keeping it past the factory warranty. Just from what we see in service dept I personally think its a smart move. There will be those who disagree with me and I respect that, however I just am going off what I see in our service dept everyday.

"IF" anyone is interested in an extended warranty as you all may or may not know we blow those out for you forum members. Just shoot Checa a call 805-482-8878 m-f 10-4pm let her know your a forum member so she knows to give you the discounted quote.

Jimmy, does your state charge sales tax on extended warranties?

The most telling part of this post (to me) is it sets the record straight on Extended Warranties.

1) It comes from a BMW Dealer disproving the many posts on Bimmerpost and other places that EW cannot be discounted.

2) It proves that you and/or the car does not need to be at a BMW Dealer's location for an EW to be purchased. That also is mistakenly posted by many on Bimmerpost and the Internet.

3) It proves from a California BMW Dealer that an EW can legally be purchased out of State, another common mistaken concept that many threads on Bimmerpost and the Internet maintain.

Bottom line, if you will not believe it from a BMW Dealer, than there is no hope for you. Just stop reposting that incorrect info for others.

I think everything you are saying is correct, however in Calgary, if you don’t even purchase the car from the local dealership (there are two, but owned by the same person), your car will either not get serviced, or will not get serviced in a timely manner.

I’ve had friends who purchased new bmw’s from either out of province or lease returns from the USA that were still under warranty (complete NA warranty), and they were told that for something as simple as the regularly scheduled oil change that the service department was booked for the next 6 months. One of my friends who purchased his BMW in Vancouver, drove 3 hrs to Edmonton (same province and got the oil change service done there), and they got him in within a week. He did that twice and than sold the car. The other friend who bought a lease repossessed M4 from California with only 6K miles ended up selling the car after a year after having to drive to Edmonton. Not sure if you have dealers like that in the USA, but in Calgary, if you don’t buy from the local dealer, you’re pretty much screwed. They didn’t say they wouldn’t service the vehicle, they just said they were booked solid for 6 months.

It appears BMW servicing in Canada runs about the same backlog as scheduling for medical issues in the Canadian Health Care System.

In the USA we don't have that issue, both personal and auto. You (or the EW Provider) just pays through the nose for it.

And yes, all my comments were in reference to USA vehicles and EW. I am not aware of EW (actually service contracts) coverage across International Borders.

Just to be clear, with both of my friends, the original factory warranty was still in effect. They didn’t have the extended warranty and both got rid of their cars within a year of purchase. If you actually purchased the vehicle from the dealer, there is no issue getting an appointment. The only issue is if you want drop off/pickup service, you need to book earlier, otherwise their shuttle service is full - ditto with loaners.

I can’t even imagine how you’d get treated here if you had the audacity to purchase an extended warranty from another dealer!!

What's your take for someone who is mechanically competent and willing to do their one work? EW still worth it?

Some of the electronics scare me. But I don't know if the EW is really worth it for someone like me.

you still have to buy the parts. I personally would rather have a EW not just bc we sell them but just for piece of mind, but that is just me, everyone has their own feelings, but for my personal view I would always get the EW if I were to ever keep a car past the FW

its the typical saying, you don't need it till you need it right?
