TMI (worth it or not)?

Hey guys,

I’m new to the f82 platform and I’ve seen some people swear by aftermarket intercoolers and some that say don’t touch it as it doenst make a difference (apart from me finding them to look great on the car).

I’m planning on getting my car in the next couple weeks or so up to a stage 2 on full e85 car.

I plan on doing things such as dp, crank hub, spark plugs, charge and j pipe, etc.

I have a friend selling a new Wagner top mount(less than a new one).

Is it worth for my goals to change it considering I’m gonna pull half those things out to change anyways, especially when I send out my dme? (I’m used to the a90 where they love to overheat so cooling is a good upgrade for them)

You won't need to send out your DME for tuning on this platform. Plenty of people with upgraded twins and singles on the stock TMIC. It's a pretty easy swap, you just have to dislodge it for the J pipe. The rest of the mods the TMIC stay in place.

You have a g82? F82 does not need bench unlock. BM3 Handles it all in their map packs.

Oh I am mistaken then. Was not aware that late production f8x needs bench unlock!
That sucks. Glad mine didn't need it

If your car had the DME firmware updated by the dealer when its in for service, it locks the DME. I had to send mine out.

Should’ve seen my face when I found out where the dme was 🙃🙃

Do u think, apart from a big plus in the looks department, that the tmi would be worth any consideration considering how much of a discount from new I’d be getting it for?

For lack of better words, absolutely not.
The stock cooling capabilities of the TMIC exceeds what most of the low and mid range aftermarket alternatives have to offer.

If you're getting the Wagner for a really significant discount, go for it. I wouldn't personally be able to justify it.
If you've got money to burn then screw it, but especially on stock turbos you'll have more than enough cooling capabilities with the stock top mount. I'd spend the money on tires (which you will need to upgrade with your power goals).

Yes. Good upgrade if you are going to road race👌

Not necessary if you are just living your life a quarter mile at a time.

I’m surprised this has not come up yet in this thread, but the TMIC on the F8X platform is actually a very common failure point. The stock TMIC has plastic internals that are known to fracture, resulting in coolant leaking into your engine (aside from reduced air cooling). One of the main issues with this is that most owners will never even realize it’s happening, because you won’t get a malfunction indication unless you’re really driving the car hard for an extended period (e.g., on track) and the coolant has leaked out to the point where the sensors pick up an issue with the air temp. A countless number of owners here have discovered their TMIC fracture only via the posts on the TMIC failure. They open expansion tank behind the TMIC to check the coolant level and discover it is quite low, indicating the fracture.

If you have the Wagner option (which is one of the best, if not the best aftermarket option) at a reasonable price, I would do it at least as preventative maintenance. I would compare the price to a new Mishimoto one though, which is also a nice replacement.

TLDR: You “upgrade” the TMIC as preventative maintenance more than for a power upgrade.

New Wagners are at a much better price point than they used to be. I went wagner because my factory one failed.

That is not accurate my 19 m4 required bench unlock as does 2020 my f36.

I see that was already addressed lol. I have to choose to spend 3 hrs driving each way or send the dme off and wait. I made the drive for the m4

My understanding is M cars manufactured >Apr 2019 will require bench unlock. It's a crap shoot, my CS DME doesn't require unlock with an April 2019 date.
