I've been reading over at 718forums and Rennlist that in normal times an exec/demo car could be had for 20% off MSRP and free CPO. In the current market conditions it may be 5% or less off MSRP so I've been chatting with the dealer selling the 2017. They are not willing to move on their asking price, which is $3K more than Edmunds TMV but the lowest in the US, so I can't really blame them. Just need to decide whether to pull the trigger on this (2017 Cayman S) for $61K or a 2016 (981) Cayman GTS with 13K miles and all the right options (X-73 Sport Suspension, leather/alcantara interior, Premium Plus package, 18-way seats, etc.) for $75K or keep my M3 6MT order for $75K or do nothing (keep driving my 320i and X5 50i at HPDEs).

His price was way out of my range as an 18 y/o but I never forgot about it and resolved a couple years back to find a good one.

They were really cheap 5-10 years ago but the survivors are getting expensive. IIRC only 5k VR6s were sold in North America so there really aren't many left running.
I had 7 Vw’s including a ‘98 12v Gti VR6 and two MK4 .:R32’s.
Nothing beats the 12V VR6 howl. I understand the attention because it sounds exotic from a distance. It was one of the only engines that an aftermarket exhaust couldn’t ruin. I’ve pulled oil pans on them w/fractured oil pumps that ran fine lol. That engine was a jewel for its time. Impossible to break or overrev. The platform was another story but I miss it.
Yours is awesome!

981 GTS over 4cylinder 718 all day every day. My good friend sold his mint 981 GTS end of 2020 in preparation for his 718 GT4. He still talks about how good the 981 GTS sounds with stock exhaust. His new 718 GT4 is very muted.

Update: The estimate for repairs is currently running at around $45,000... and they have still to measure the chassis to check for deformation. It is looking increasingly likely that the insurance company will declare this a write-off! (or I will end up with an un-sellable car that doesn't go in a straight line!)

My estimated 9 month 992 GTS waitlist for an allocation is starting to look just a bit too long.

Yep, that thread went off the rails in no time, surprised it hasn't been locked yet.

Sadly the GTS 4.0, GT4 and Spyder even the 992 GT3 all have the OPF in the exhaust. The 992 GT3's engine is able to overcome the exhaust note mainly due to the more race inspired engine.

The 718 GTS 4.0, GT4 and Spyder isn't that way and the filter strangles the exhaust note a lot. While the filter in the US bound cars isn't as strict, it is still there. The only way to overcome that is to just straight up remove it. Some dude on Rennlist, I showed to minn19, used a drill to remove it by hand, which I found to be funny.

To be fair, those who don't like the car are antagonizing those who do, so it's an offensive-defensive clusterfuck. One party is telling them their cars suck and they have no taste, and the other party rebuts in kind.

Yeah, it takes two to tango (and to derail a thread).

In other news, 2009 997.2 C4S with 286,525 miles:

I'm sure anytime now the mods will start banning those G80/2 owners from the M2 forums.

I just saw the same G8X M3 I saw the previous weeks ago, and the owner made it even uglier. He added M-Stripes to the horizontal slats! And they aren't even the correct color shades!

That guy actually lives just south of me and offered to do the work on mine. When I got the car I was 100% sure that I was going to buy some vendors OAP to remove them. But after having the car for this long now, I really like the sound and the way the stock PSE is programmed. I can leave the valves open all the time and it is nice and civil when just cruising, then around 4k the valves fully open and it builds to a nice crescendo at redline.

I must be getting old.
