If there is one thing we learned from Edward Snowden, it is that nothing is unhackable.
It will be just a matter of time.

I guess BMS will be getting a huge boost in business soon as they roll out the G Platform.

If people can still manage to jailbreak iPhones these days despite Apple's constant efforts to put an end to it I'm sure the ECU can still be cracked. Just need to find the right people for the job. They used to say the same thing about the "uncrackable" Toyota ECU's in the ISF I had. It took them 9 years to figure out how to crack that thing... It'll happen eventually, just need to be patient

The F80's just shot up in value since they can be tuned
Peeps are going to be looking for tuning car and not a strapped car. |

Inevitable now that cars (especially BMWs) are so homogenized. When you put the same engine in multiple cars, tuning the car is literally all a manufacturer can do at a consumer facing level to sell it as a different trim level. Just look at modern AMG cars, they almost all have the same turbo v8 with different tunes - great for manufacturing, but no character and completely homogenized across the range.
I'm honestly more pissed BMW shutdown newtis - but that's the Company now, will do anything to keep control and squeeze the pennies.

The MK4 (A80) Supra had a virtually 'uncrackable' ECU. So what! Enthusiasts with new BMWs will have to maybe look at standalones again, like we did in the olden days of japanese performance
I can totally understand BMWs thinking. They want to control the develop of performance with their engines. Their dealers probably won't be burdened with as many shady warranty claims anymore either.

They've already unlocked the ECU for S58 engines in the X3 ///M ... it's only a matter of time.

1. 2021 are now just starting to hit lots. 2020s were at EOP right before the lockdowns and the DME transition started in June. 2. A change to DMEs doesn't happen in one day in global supply chain. It will likely be a phased implementation based on the factories that have the lowest current supply, that's why it effects certain models built in June but not others, and then some others in July, then some more in August, then eventually the US factory.

You were a relative sophisticate back then. A lot of enthusiasts (especially Supra guys like me) were happy if they were able to get their hands on the S-AFC/VPC combo which was the 'holy grail' for a while
