Tin Can / Bottom Scraping Noise
Hello everyone, I know this topic has been covered but are the noises suppose to get worse as you get closer to 1200 mile service? Yesterday and this morning I had Tin can noise quite a few times and the dreaded ssscccrrreeeecheeeee noise like something is dragging along the bottom of the car. Did anyone diagnose this problem at 1200 mile service and I would like to tell the service advisor to change something without him telling me he can't reproduce the noises. Thanks
I started this thread in Oct. 2014 and it is still going on with the newer cars IT IS NOW 2/12/2016. Does BMW even read these issues. When they test drive these cars they don't hear this sound. You know when your test driving the car you might say something like "Holy shit what was that."? Last edited by secretariat; 02-12-2016 at 10:46 AM.. |

I have only had the kgggggcchhh noise once. The screech only off and on when braking coming down the north side of the grössglochner north side in the fog. Check out the two other threads on this topic.

Drain current differential oil and any sediment and replace with higher quality differential oil. This is what worked on my e92. The name of the differential is in another thread on this same issue.

I just spoke with BMWNA and they don't know anything about this, is this complete bullshit. How many people have to complain about this before they figure out WTF it is. These are not NORMAL noises with a sports sedan. I hear these noises and it scares the shit out of me. I'm afraid to drive now waiting to hear this sccrrrreeeeech fucking noise. The tin can noise is every fucking time I drive now.

1000 miles and am hearing it less. Usuall from the left rear, heard it yesterday from the right rear. Pretty sure it is related to those aluminum guard plates around the brakes.
There has got to be a simple fix. |

Never had this noise until now (6500km/4000mls in). Now I have been having it for the last week. Pretty annoying . Can't wait for that pebble (or whatever else is stuck there) to come out of the parking brake drum.

2000+ miles and I hear it at least once every 2-3 weeks. It may happen more but I might not hear it because of music, etc. It is very annoying. Interestingly I always hear it on the right side of the car.

I had the same problem on my E92 and it most definitely was the diff. my service advisor said it's a know problem and they would look into possibly replacing the diff. since it was a lease and i was turning it in a few days i didn't do anything.
The really shitty moment was about 1,000 miles into my new F80 I heard the same noise. Only once and not since then but I'm really worried there is a flaw with BMW's rear diff's.

I have gotten this a couple of times. Very loud and metallic sounding. First time I stopped car then backed up, noise gone. I think is has to do with a small rock or pebble rubbing on backing plate. BTW my car has CCB, have also driven non CCB car that exhibited same noise, above mentioned fix did not work however.

I'm at about 3800 miles - I hear it less often than before the 1200 mile service, but it still happens occasionally when starting out from a stop in 1st or 2nd gear (DCT).
I've already tracked my car - performed like a rock star. That occasional noise only happens maybe 1-2 times per week (daily driver). As long as I continue to have warranty coverage and as long as car continues to drive great (which it does) then I'm not going to worry and let it ruin my enjoyment of the car... |

It has nothing to do with the differential. It's little pebbles stuck around brake shield. There's no recall or campaign for it. They have a campaign for only the m4's for a cam transistor

If it is an insanely loud screech, It is 100% a miniature pebble stuck between the brake shield and the rotor. It happened many years ago on my Eclipse, on my E46 M3 and more recently on the E90 M3. I still remember it scarring the crap out of me when I heard it the first time. I thought my brake pads had catastrophically failed and I was metal on metal. On all three occasions I found a very very tiny pebble/rock stuck between the brake shield and the rotor. It was so tiny, I had to use a flashlight to find it. I removed it using the dentist pick. If you hear it again, I would recommend removing the wheel and checking that area thoroughly.

I talked to my service foreman this week when I brought mine in for the 1200m service about this. Happened to me about 4 times during break in. He said it was totally normal and expected during break in with the fluids they use. Said it should not happen after the 1200 mile service.
He said there is a very small chance that over the life of the car, you may get a pebble stuck in the shielding around the wheel but this should be very rare and sound much different. |

MoxieMoxie, there are two distinct sounds that I am hearing. The first one is the "driving over plastic bottles" sound which probably has to do with the aluminum around the heat shields. The second one is a metal on metal grinding sound and if it's a pebble stuck between the brakes and the wheel it is not a unusual occurrence. Because I am very careful driving very slow where there may be loose pebbles, rocks or stones. I have had the metal on metal sound at least three times all on slow left or right hand turns.
I'm bringing the car in Saturday morning and I will be sure to tell them to remove the wheels and look for a pebble, especially from the rear. I would also like to see it if they find it because if it is a pebble causing this screeeeeech noise than there has to be something you can do to prevent pebbles from entering this area. |

It is. I had the noise and reversed and pulled forward a few times and it went. I believe it was a small stone caught in the guard plates.

I've heard that noise too. I'm trying to see if there is a way to duplicate it. Last time it happened was right after I played around in S3 mode for a while and slowed down in a parking lot to park.
In a grand scheme of things though I'm not really worried about it. |

I'm not buying that explanation. No way little pebbles stuck around a brake shield could make the very loud metal on metal grinding sound that I heard.
