BootMod3 Back End Flash and JB4?
I swear I have seen mentions of a Back End Flash (BEF) for the BootMod3 OBD tune, for use with a JB4, but I can't seem to find any actual BEF for the BM3 on the OTS or My Maps section of BootMod 3. Am I just imagining this, or does a BEF for BM3 exist?

You can obtain the full 4MB JB4 BEF (.bin file) that BMS provides and manually upload it to your BM3 account and use it to flash. It is the same file used for MHD.
Keep in mind though: The JB4 BEF will most likely be of a different software version than your current version, so the correct way to flash it is by doing a FULL flash (selecting the last option from the Flash list which says something like Unlock and skip checks). Also keep in mind that by doing this your software version will change, so when you decide to go back to BM3 maps you need to do the same thing, i.e. do a full flash of a BM3 map, in order to go back to your original version. I would also make a backup of the VIN#.coding file saved in the bootmod3 folder so that you have it just incase when switching back to stock software version. Lastly, some people have taken the other route of uploading the JB4 BEF to their BM3 account and simply importing the changes from that map onto a stock map of their car that exists on their BM3 account. This means that you don't have to worry about changing software versions as it will create a new map for you based on your original software version. This normally would and should work, however, IF the JB4 BEF uses any tables that are beyond what the BM3 editor shows, you will NOT be able to see or import those changes onto a stock map. And so you will not have all the changes BMS intended to have in their BEF. I am not saying that there are any tables that BMS use outside of those that BM3 shows you, but in the case they do, your best option is the first one I presented you with above (Doing a full flash of the actualy JB4 BEF .bin file). Disclaimer: I do not take any responsibility for any issues/damages that might result from you doing this. Had to put that in

BMS posts the full unlocked back end flash files. BM3 claims you can load them with their software but I also read some customers had issues with it. With MHD being only $299 for a flash license it seems like the better option unless you happen to already own BM3 (then obviously no point getting MHD), in which case contact them for help on how to load the BEF files properly.

I know two guys that tried. They would import instead of just flash the BEF but then they were told to just flash not import. One of them ended up selling the JB4 though and went with a custom full E85 flash and the other kept the JB4 for now to spray methanol with it. He’s considering this other controller called torque byte to have more adjustability for methanol but I haven’t talked to him in a few weeks now.

Thanks for providing some insight. Can you link where BMS or MHD elaborate more on this? I'd love to learn and understand more about this. Are there any torque tables adjusted to go beyond the factory table limits? Or are there any newly added/defined tables that are not part of the existing map? That's the only way I can think of that could have you run into issues where the flasher doesn't calculate checksums properly. Plus, won't you probably have a shit load of codes and/or issues with how the car runs if that was in fact the case?
Mind you I'm no tuner or pro at this, I'm an enthusiast eager to learn and understand.

I've tried this a couple of ways, and found that in the end, the BM3 alone is significantly better. At least for me. I still use my JB4 for logging and gauges.

Did you try only with the base back end flashes? Or even after getting a custom back end flash the bootmod3 alone was still better?
How did you manually upload it to your BM3 account? |

I recently went back to JB4, and wanted to retain BM3 as the BEF flasher. However, custom maps on BM3 do not have the additional flash options (e.g. vmax, cat, burbles, cold start, etc) available... so unless you want to modify the BMS BEF manually, then the BM3 as the flasher route is a no go. Like Dave mentioned, I too prefer the JB4 logging design. It's much more reliable, and easier to read IMO based on my experience. There's nothing wrong with MHD as the BEF flasher. In fact, I like MHD's interface better than BM3, but it's no secret that BM3 is the fastest flashing platform by a long mile... Last edited by FriedPiston; 11-06-2018 at 09:27 PM.. |

that's why JB4 is still installed. I like the gauges and logging.

So i have a full stage 2 catless tune done by alpine and want to add jb4 with flex fuel sensor for e85 and map switching. Is this going to be a problem? I was told i could just install jb4 and it would work on top of my tune?
