Not for me once they turbo'd it. It's funny, but I'm ok with turbos on some cars, like the M3/4 for instance, but not on others, like the 911. Plus the 991 is too big in my opinion. I am interested in a 997 though.

Definitely. It's a 911 and I love them....
... until I built a base Carrera (without going overboard with options) and ended up with a $99k car. For a base model? No thanks.

I did the same thing. That car is darned expensive. A Cayman is closer in price to a M3/M4. I seriously considered getting a Cayman S over my M3 but it ended up being just a bit too impractical.

I somewhat agree with this, while all 991 variants literally look like sex on wheels on the road (so much road presence) the 997 is just the perfect size for me. After driving a 997s in the canyons I can only say the hype is very real (the steering feel was absolutely phenomenal), while the base 991 didn't wow me as much. I'm sure the 991s would change my mind though lol, but the 991 did feel a bit bigger than the 997. With turbo lag I am not sure how I would feel...though I definitely didn't mind it in the 997tts I drove, in that car I can only say the wait is worth it when the boost hits like a truck

718S came out to $78k for me. Still on the steep side considering my friend bought his GT4 for less than $90k.

Yea, his is pretty low on options, but it's perfect. Yellow paint, yellow seat belts, heated seats and fire extinguisher. Done.
Even at that price, it's out of my budget (wouldn't be if I sold my M3's, but I don't want to). But it's hard for me to justify a "normal" Boxster or Cayman when they are so close to that GT4. I wouldn't mind a stripper Boxster Spyder either, but too much money for me.

Seriously considering a base 911.2. After I build it on the configurator, it comes out a hair over the 100k mark. Somewhat difficult to justify in my opinion.
M4 with the competition package is the most likely alternative. Waiting for more youtube reviews. Not a big fan of Steve Sutcliffe. |

Agreed. The only way I see myself into a Porsche I really want would be used. Hopefully the Spyders depreciate more than the GT's, but this is a long term goal anyway.

Great movie lol
I've configured a low-optioned 991.2 base and I agree it's a ton of money for a base. I think I'd rather build a stripper GT4 for less money; it's still a little out of my price range, though. I think a 718 Cayman S might be something to consider, too. The M3 hits such a sweet spot, though!

I'm starting to consider Porsche for my next vehicle for the simple reason that my kids are going to be at the age where they can fit in the back, climb back there themselves, and it'd be alot of fun.
I'm concerned - without having driven one - that the 991.2 will have lost the classic Porsche recipe. I've owned the most anemic boxster and I've driven a few other Porsches - not many - and to me their fun comes from some combination of the following factors: 1. Low weight & unique weight distribution (compared to traditional cars) 2. Potent engine sound coming from behind your head 3. Unique steering feel from no mass over the front axle 4. Rev happy flat six engines that WANT to be wrung out - that encourage keeping the pedal buried 5. A simply glorious seating position and visibility profile 6. A damn short wheelbase (consider even the 991 is 14" shorter in wheelbase than the f80 - that's enormous). A 993, the most fun 911 I've driven, had a 90" wheelbase - 20" less than the f80. Probably a few others in there. My experience is that each successive Porsche 911 generation has lost some of those things. They are more technically proficient, but less fun to drive as a result. At this stage, I look at the 991.2 and it's price and combination and say "no thanks"....but only time will tell what my true commitment is |

The question is would a CPO Porsche 991 be as likely to be abused as a CPO M4? I'm considering a 2015 991, but the rear seats are probably inadequate for my 3-month-old until he gets out of a rear-facing car seat.

The 991 generation for me is the ideal GT car. What it can do performance-wise and handling are immense. The 'GT' models are hard to describe in words. I understand why people are paying 2x Msrp after being in a friends not too long ago.
I am excited to check out the new turbo 911 models. Porsche knows, and is one of the best when it comes to turbo'd cars. Reviews so far have been very positive and they do not dissapoint. I don't think the 991 feels very big despite slightly growing. It's so nimble and truly drives like a very small, light car. I also agree with the above that it's purely sexy and has immense road presence. Last edited by Motorsportenterprise; 03-10-2016 at 07:39 PM.. |
