True- However, I think that maybe the m3 ruined it for me for the x5m, it is simply much more fun to drive, and tossable. Perhaps if a performance suv is your only car, you will be plenty happy.
I am debating getting one for me after getting rid of my F80 recently. My wife has an F80, so I figured I can take her car the days I want that experience again.

Have you driven a Macan Turbo? That's the closest proxy and you can figure out in a pretty short amount of time by driving the Macan S and Macan Turbo back to back if you like the "performance SUV" idea

I have driven a Macan Turbo with PP and did enjoy it, just not the $100k + price tag and the terribly outdated feel of the center console and button layout. That being said the Macan GTS for example drives differently than an X3 M40i. So idk how much of a comparable feel the two will be. If I do go this route, I think a test drive would have to happen.

Definitely appreciate the suggestion, however, as that may be the X4Ms benchmark comparison.

So, I was more saying that Macan Turbo is a 4200lb high ride height hatchback type vehicle that tries its best to mimic a sports car. Some feel it’s the “best” of that type of car. If you drove it and just couldn’t get over the weight and height, I don’t see how x3m or any sporty truck would work

I’d also want to suggest GLA45 hot hatch as a lower and smaller choice

I liked it. Didn't say I couldn't get over that stuff. I couldn't get over the interior layout and price. My thought is if it drives like the Turbo then I'm likely in, but considering the M40i doesn't drive like the GTE or even S, I would need an X3M year drive.

The X3 drives pretty awful. I got a loaner recently, and granted it was not an M Package, but it had the Eco, Comfort, Sport, & Sport+ modes. The technology seemed more up to date, but the interior lacked a whole lot. The road noise was terrible and the car seemed to drive itself, no user input or feedback.

The OP is asking about the X3M which is completely different animal. What you said is akin to saying you are not impressed with the M3 because you didn't like the 330i loaner you had.

Not a terrible idea as the X3m is good for an SUV, but unibody SUV's are completely pointless in general. Get an RS5 sportback, pretty much a better car in every way. If only BMW made M3 and m5 wagons.

The X3M is less expensive, faster, roomier, etc. So how is the RS5 better at all Perhaps interior quality may be better but not by much.

depends on how you define 'better'

the x3m is like 4500+ pounds and 10 inches taller than the RS5. Being that tall and heavy has its limitations on how fast you can take a corner. (funny how BMW hasn't really allowed any mag to post lap times... yet they always bring up the 0-60).

M SUVs typically tank in value. RS cars hold pretty well.

Most of the reviews I've seen say the X3M is a bit too harsh for the street with its firm suspension and 21" wheels... and that the m40i variant is a better overall car.

Better handling, better interior like you said, better looking and better ride quality. Pricing is similar, base X3m power is similar.

X3M pulls better g's on the skidpad too. RS5 isn't exactly svelte - it's ~4100 lbs.

The ride isn't any harsher than an M3 - less bouncy per my wife. The m40i with the run flats they put on it isn't exactly plush.

The RS5 weighs over 4000 lbs so the weight difference isnt much and I certainly dont think it is known for its handling. I wouldnt be surprised one bit if the X3M beat it around a track. But I dont think many people track either the RS5 or X3M so kind of a moot point.

Anyway, I was just surprised to see someone say so definitively the RS5 is the better vehicle when most consider it overpriced and not a standout it any one attribute.

Does it handle better? The nose-heavy FWD biased RS5 isnt known for its handling prowess.

But anyway, aside from the subjective measures like looks (i.e. sleek coupe vs SUV), I dont see how you can say the RS5 is better in every way than the X3M which will likely outperform it, give you more interior room, and cost less.

Well yea i was wrong when i first wrote that i figured the RS5 would be faster but its not in a straight line atleast. Track is a different story i think, the 2010 RS5 beats the x3m by a second or so around autozeitang track. I just think SUV’s are pointless, BMW could have made a 3 series wagon with the same or more space but better performance than the X3M.

Got a source for the lap times?

Performance isn’t that impressive until you realize it’s an SUV pulling similar numbers to high performance sports sedans/coupes. For the US market, wagons just don’t sell so it’s natural to combine high HP and handling with an SUV body. Plus, BMW can’t ignore the competitors with what MB, Audi and Porsche have already put into the market. There’s always hope for being able to source the Alpina B3 touring, but I wouldn’t hold my breathe.

Rs5 is #77. X3 is #107.

But yes i agree BMW has done an amazing job with the XM’s for what they are and i understand why wagons are discontinued in NA. Just wish it wasn’t the case, car buyers are retarded.

It is what it is, but I’ve got to say, if you can get equivalent or better performance from an suv chassis, the convenience of the ground clearance (even just parking lot curbs), visibility from higher driving position, etc aren’t all bad things...judging by the RS5 sport back, the weight savings and handling isn’t that dramatically different to demand a more car-like platform.

I go into turns expecting the suv body roll, but it just isn’t there. Back when I was younger and stupider, I used to do some pretty insane driving in an suv, but I knew that vehicle’s limits in and out - when the back would swing out, how hard push to get it to go sideways without upsetting the balance, etc. but I don’t that on a public road anymore so need to get the X3M broke in and get to a skidpad to really see what it can do.

that autozeitung magazine has some questionable results. They have a e90 M3 beating an f82 M4 around their track.

But yeah there are just inherent flaws with an SUV this tall and heavy when you try to make it into a sports car.

TopGear gave the car a 4/10 rating. They gave the RS5 a 6/10. F80 M3 got 8/10.

Topgear have had their collective heads up their asses for a while now. They give the M135i high praise if that tells you anything. Take a trip over to the X3M forums and I’d say about half of the owners are top gear’s local audience so apparently their opinion means f*ck-all.

Ride too stiff? Seriously, these journalists should drive a comparison point car back to back. Apparently, they haven’t drive an F8x car for a few years and forgot what it was like.
