Slight noise in 1st / 2nd with manual transmission?

Anyone get a slight groaning noise when in 1st or 2nd gear in a parking lot? Basically low speed (5mph or less) and in gear.. it's kind of hard to hear but you need to be in gear and moving slowly.. if you clutch in the sound goes away. The sound can be replicated by not giving the car any gas in gear, RPMS SUB 1,000, and just rolling in gear basically.. extremely faint groaning sound.

I'm guessing it's normal since everything drives fine but just curious if anyone else hears anything?

Mine does the same, seems normal to me though. Everything is just moving slowly and she wants to go go go.

Same with me. All kinds of noises in 1st and 2nd at slow speeds. But I have 150 miles on the car so looking for this to ease up as the car breaks in. Picked her up yesterday.

Haven't noticed it in mine and I'm at 600km nowZ will fart around tomorrow and see if I notice anything.

I can tell how long it's been since I've driven a stick as a daily though... Coming to a stop and depressing the clutch from 1st gear always produces a lovely rattle under the car! Hopefully once I finish breaking in my skill as a driver with more than one leg that will go away...

I've driven manuals for a while now, but this one is different. Yesterday for the first time I noticed that when you slowly release the clutch on first gear and full stop, the engine will rev slightly to prevent stalling! So no need to do the old school gas/clutch dance.

But I'm still trying to achieve a smooth shift from first to second.

Mine has a bit of a thump between 1st and 2nd. For smooth shifting I'm always watching my wife's head in my peripheral vision. I try to get it where her neck and head don't move on gear changes. But she always moves a little. I'm not as smooth as I thought.

I'm kidding. I never thought I was smooth.

+1 on the 1-2 shift. I always get a 2 step jerk. I don't want to release the clutch so slowly that it slips.

I've found the car is smoother the faster you release the clutch. Not drop it but you get the idea. After 9500 miles I can drive this car very smoothly.

Not sure if this is the same thing but I can get my manual cars going without using gas in 1st gear. As long as their is enough torque it's not an issue. I still gas it of course in normal driving.

I always wanted to ask this question, in stop and go traffic is it fine to just release the clutch without giving gas... in my audi S4 it used to work great as the engine reved up a bit. This really helps in stop and go traffic

I noticed that too. I have open valves and on cold starts I try not to use the accelerator when backing out of my garage, and the car did it for me. Guess I won't be leaving quietly.

The second gear needs to be a quick release, I see it as "catching" the rpms if that makes sense.. catch it quickly before it drops below the intended rpms if you are in sport+ so you don't get the rough shift. If you are in comfort / sport you can granny shift all day.

Thanks. Quick to second at WOT would set off the DSC though and the car might bog.

I wonder if this issue has anything to do with this:

SAFETY RECALL NOTICE
To: All Center Operators, Sales Managers, Service Manager, Parts Manager and Warranty Processor
RE: Recall Campaign 15V-xxx: Checking Driveshaft Universal Joint B26 01 15
BMW Group is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall including Delivery Stop (effective November 13, 2015) involving the driveshaft universal joint inspection and possible replacement in certain M3 Sedan (F80), M4 Coupe (F82) and M4 Convertible (F83).
Owners will be notified by First Class mail about the Recall and will be instructed to bring their vehicles in for a free repair when repair is available.
Please be reminded that it is a violation of Federal law for you to sell, lease or deliver any vehicle covered by this notification until the recall repair has been performed. This means that centers may not legally deliver new motor vehicles to a consumer until it is fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts subject to a Recall. Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of this law.
Also, you should not sell, lease or deliver any Certified Pre-Owned or used vehicles subject to a safety recall until the repair is completed.
Please follow any special instructions that we provide to you for the return or disposition of recall parts.
We appreciate all your assistance with this Recall.
