Question regarding windshield replacement
Hi Everyone,
Only a week into my m3 ownership, a rock flew up at me on the road and cracked my windshield. I spoke to a reputable auto glass shop in the area, who said even going with Pilkington glass may not be enough for me to be able to see the HUD and I need to get the factory glass. Has anyone with HUD replaced their windshield? Did you need to get something different because of the heads up display? Thanks for the help!

I've had to buy two new windshields for my project, one is OEM, one is "OE quality" aftermarket. You can 100% tell the difference.
My glass shop said the same, that most insurance companies fully OEM glass with HUD glass replacement. Also, you will notice distortion / optical "ribbing" when you're looking across the aftermarket windshield, you will notice it, and you'll suddenly feel like you're driving a salvage rebuild Ford Taurus. Google your states insurance laws.
When my windshield cracked, even my own insurance company told me not to take it to the dealer for OEM glass. I looked up Florida state law and by law, the insurance MUST pay 100%. No matter who does the job. So, I took it to the dealer and even they said the insurance was not going to pay for it. I got it done, filed the claim for 2400.00 bucks through the dealer and received a check for the full amount. The only down side is I have to put up the funds first. Nice miles on the CC. To make a long story short, even my own insurance and dealership tried talking me out of taking it to the dealer. This is NOT the case... |

I believe there are 3 different windshields for the F8x depending if you have HUD and the driving assistance features. You need to give them your VIN so they can order the right one.

When I purchased my M3 it had an aftermarket windshield and the biggest issue I found is not the HUD which works perfectly but the rain sensing wipers that don't work with the aftermarket glass. Luckily she's not my daily and only sees rain if we get caught out.

I had the windshield replaced about a month into ownership. I have Allstate insurance and full glass coverage. I got OEM glass and have had no problems. This was over 2 years ago. I brought the car to the dealer for this. I've had other windshields replaced at my office or home. My X2 has HUD as well, and replaced that windshield as well...no problems.
Bottom line in my humble opinion. Get good car insurance. You get what you pay for. I've used Allstate for 32 years. I've never had a problem with them. |

My M3 was Base model, no ConnectedDrive or HUD. In case it matters.

Not sure who you insure with but I just take the car to the dealership and Geico pays for the replacement every time without issue. I'd check coverage then stick with OEM glass to make things easier

I got OEM glass, new gel pad, etc everything is working as it should. My only gripe is the windshiel wipers are not properly adjusted to oem specs. I will do this myself once my wiper puller comes in the mail. Too scared to put too much pressure on them to get it off.

I replaced my windshield at the dealer. It's going to cost the same regardless if I use safelite or not because of my insurance deductible, so might as well go OEM to make sure the HUD is working, they seal it right etc. HOnestly, I would cancel your appointment and get it to a dealer and get a nice loaner while you wait. I got an X5 sDrive40 and it convinced me to perhaps get an X5 down the road. What an excellent SUV!

I had Safelite replace my windshield. I told them my car had the HUD. An installer came out in a van and replaced the windshield in my driveway. the job took about an hour. The new windshield is as good or better than the original and the HUD works just fine.

Safelite just left.
Good news: flawless install with the OEM glass. Not a scratch or issue with the install. Bad news: They did not see the factory defect on the driver side/interior of the glass. Once we pulled it out of the garage and the sun hit it, noticeable! They will be back in two weeks to install another OEM piece. |
