Smile 3D model and render of M4. Work in progress. JUNE 16 Interior Updated!

Update post JUNE 16

Here's the update on the interior work in progress, I just need to model the front row seats and really detail up the dashboard. I got quite busy with moving and work recently so the progress has been slow.

Hope I can get this polished up soon! Thanks guys!

Update post MAY 22

So the model is coming along, I assigned some simple shaders to the brake parts to test the render. the headlights and taillights are in there now, and I'm just starting to work on the interior. This will be the hardest thing I've ever modeled so far.

Update post #9

Hey guys I'm an artist in Canada, big love for BMW and excited to share what I've been working on.

I'm not a professional modeller, but as I decided to pick up and learn Modo for 3d concept design, I thought what better project would there be than to try and build the BMW M4 virtually?

There's still a lot of pain staking work needed to finish this model, but I think the end result will make it worth it, plus I'll have picked up new skills in the 3d program. The most difficult challenge would be to get the headlight to look right. so far the side fin took a while, the front bumper is a bitch to do cleanly, and there's so much time spent trying to match the lines to the real car.

I know this is a different kind of project most people would post on here, but I think it could be really fun. Kind of like building a scale model car. If you guys like what you see I'll continue to update the progress here, and do some renders when the model is done!

Eventually I will release the model for anyone who want to take on a bit of redesign work for their own bumpers or whatever, it probably won't be hard to come up with something better than Duke Dynamic or hamann but thats setting the bar pretty low.

Let me know how you feel about the project! Thanks! maybe eventually I'll trade in my Zed for the real deal.

Very very cool. What program are you modeling in? I'm always curious to what software you 3d designers use to create these car renders

Looks like I missed it, you said the program above. I'll have to google the software and check it out.

Dude, that's amazing work!
I am a Design Engineer and use CAD daily, but that type of surface modeling is beyond me.
I would be interested in hearing more about how you did it, and if you want to share the model I would love to play with it!

awesome! When my car is here, and if you don't have access to one near you, I would be happy to take high-res pictures for you to do modeling with. At least for the front. I am getting an M3

Thanks dude! I'm a concept artist for film, but I'm trying to add 3D to my arsenal of tools. This is a subdivision model done with modo, kinda like modeling with Maya only a more accessible interface. It will take me a while longer to finish the interior and get the level of detail that I want.

AWESOME! so jelly! I would love to get some shots from odd angles eventually, things like inside the wheel wells, stuff that the promo photos don't show.

Thanks! yea I'm working on the model right now, will update more process work as I go!

Here are the brake parts I'm working on. Getting the extra bit of details for these ones. lots to do. Things will start to look better with proper lighting and real materials. Thanks for the support guys!

This is really fantastic work. Bravo.

I am curious about your methods. Do you have software to help automate some of the process? Such as, can you import a photograph and have a tool give a rough-cut at 3d-ifying it? Or do you just have to sort of start from scratch and do it yourself?

Next step is a papercraft model, right. I've seen the life-sized ones people do and it is quite simply mind blowing.

Thanks! so far nothing is automated, I used a lot of reference photos and match to them by eye as close as I can. So the whole model is started from scratch with every point and line moved there by hand.

I hope I can just 3D print a scaled model of the thing. or wait till we can 3d print life sized cars which i dont mind.

Fantastic work. Makes me want to buy a 3-D printer. Imagine being able to print your own 1:18 model with any mods you want...
