What does municipal bankruptcy have to do with NAIAS? Detroit needs this more now than ever. The show brings in thousands of travelers who inject money in to the Detroit economy.

The show is not publicly funded. Quite the opposite, really.

"...aluminum and magnesium and carbon fiber in the crash zones."

That will cost a mint to get fixed. Hope insurance companies don't get wind of this.

Here's an explanation of DPC and how it works, planetary gear set electronically controlled by an electric motor actuated clutch.

Anyone want to guess what this could entitle in terms of effected components and material?
Lightweight materials in "high-rpm parts of the powertrain"

Crankshaft, Pistons, Valves, Camshaft, Turbos, Transmission are a few high rpm powertrain components I can think of. I wonder what materials not already used in the standard engine he is eluding to, titanium sounds too expensive.

7400 is "high RPM"??.......hmmm

On another note, I would expect nothing less than the head of the M division to come out and hype the car. Nothing shocking.

Best post on bimmerpost for ages - it answered so many debated questions in one go!

- confirmed RWD only M3/M4
- M (presumably MP ?) of 4 series soon
- M2 is pretty likely
- M2 will have i6 when (and if) it arrives
- i4s and hybrid are not likely or imminent for M
- A big diesel M Performance is not ruled out for 3 and 4 series
- FN doesn't like the A45 haha

Sounds like they're making the M3/4 standard CRT fare. Now that is interesting. And best engine they have developed? Hmmm.

Is this why the new M3/4 have different model codes - because the chassis and other elements deviate so far from the F30/F32 platform?

is it even worth getting a 435i now?

by the time it gets delivered it will be september/october and then this thing will be revealed in january (just 2-3 months later) which im sure will spoil the looks of the "basic" 435i

then in a few months from then it will be available for purchase? why bother with a 435i then?

why is the M version of the 4 series coming so soon when it took 3+ years for the M version of the 5 to come out?

Depends on your needs/wants and budget. The M4 will for sure be well into the $80k range when optioned but offer much much more performance. The big questions to consider are: Do you want that performance and can you actually use it? Can you afford that car? Another thing to think about is that even though it may be revealed in January, actual deliveries are probably second half of 2014 or about a year after 435i.

Wow, that is really bold statement, especially when the M3 is coming from one of the best production V8s in the world. Let's not even mention some of the other masterpiece engines. Please be true.

FN: As to all-wheel drive, we use it on M Performance Automobiles [and the X5 M and X6 M] but it’s not necessary on M cars. On the new M3 it would add 80 kg [176 pounds] and the steering would not be pure any more. It’s not worth it. The car has 50:50 weight distribution and new traction management and a new differential, a development of the principle of the M5′s, with torque vectoring, so it has excellent traction.

Take that with a grain of salt...whats he going to say that the new engine is inferior to the outgoing S65?

Detroit needs this kind of "tourism" and exposure

This is true.

Personally the 0.4-0.7 second 0-60 advantage that AWD gives you does not make up for its drawbacks.

Can't wait to see the car
NAIAS won't be cancelled, received a press release today. In fact they are finishing a $350 million dollar renovation this upcoming year.

i hear you, but the point is that i dont want to spend 60k+ on a 435i only to see that its been outdated/outdone literally 3 months later

the m4 will probably look a lot better and make me say "damn, i wish my car had that" ...it will inevitably happen to every car we choose, but at least let us enjoy our basic 4's for longer than 3 ******* months

the 5 and 6 series owners didnt see the M5/M6 for like 2+ years and got to enjoy their cars for a long time. if i buy a brand new 4 series ill enjoy it and then get teased by the M4's superior looks/tech just a few months later. and im not even talking about the performance yet. the performance is something i probably wouldnt even need but the looks/tech alone will ruin the joy of owning a "basic" 4 series and make me regret my purchase. suppose this car has a much more aggressive air breather side vent, or the LED headlights from the concept, or something along those lines?

sorry but thats a deal breaker to me, i just changed my mind about getting a 4 series over that. and now i will probably have to switch to another brand all together since im not waiting til late 2014 for a car. bmw does not know how to make their customers feel special at all.
