How often should I change the coolant in the car?
regarding coolant interval, i include below the complete CBS schedule taken right from my SA's screen 2 months ago. as you can see coolant is not included. this is the so-called "lifetime fill", which is of course marketing-dept-nonsense and i also attach one of my favorite Mike Miller quotes on the subject. you can also see the three year brake fluid interval. brake fluid, which is notoriously hydroscopic, is changed by time not by mileage. here's what I do, based on my plan to keep this car a long time:
I pay to have my hydraulic sys flushed at 18 months, BMW pays for the flush 18 months later. this results in a 18 month interval. at each flush i also flush the coolant. after the maintenance plan expires i'll continue an 18 month interval for both. eng, DCT and diff also serviced more frequently than scheduled, but this post is getting too long.

Coolant is the one fluid where I've seen the industry switch to 10-year duration fluids and it has worked out reasonably well. It is a closed system; I don't seea reason to challenge it at this point. Look at e90s coming up at over 10 years - besides the occasional water pump, the cooling system is solid.

Thanks! I plan on keeping this car for a long time and wanted to make sure I'm doing the right maintenance.

Do you know if the s55 needs walnut blasting?

It appears that all direct injected motors will have a walnut blast in their future, it's only a question of when. This is one of the reasons I change my oil more frequently than scheduled by the CBS. The primary culprit imo is the crankcase rebreather (separator) system and the fact that fuel system cleaners (which I always used in the past) are obviously ineffective with direct injection. The solution, the very moment I'm off warranty, is an in-line catch can which is proven effective in removing the crap from the vapor that system delivers to the intake.
In case you haven't already had the experience, for example in a 335 after 70K miles, I can tell you that the difference pre- and post-walnut blast is not subtle.

Nothing you said is incorrect - there is no cleaning effect on the tops of the valves in this type of engine.

However, you are missing an obvious point as it relates to frequency of build-up:

Oil consumption characteristics.

The S55 has some of the lowest oil consumption characteristics of any modern turbo DI motor. As of 50k miles, I consume one quart every 9k miles - that's it.

You look at the n54, by comparison BMW's first Turbo DI motor with known carbon build-up issues. That engine tends to do one quart of consumption every ~3-5k miles on average.

I'm sure the s55 will benefit from walnut blasting at some point. I'm also sure (thus far) it will be less frequent than many other similar motors.

P.s. Valve build-up isn't just a function of oil consumption rates - there's far more. But a LACK of oil consumption combined with other positive factors could mean build-up will be dramatically lower.

That seems high compared to mine, I've only ever topped up once in 80,000 miles with 1 litre.
