My guess is they used the narrower tires and wheels to allow for easier drifting and facilitate the stunts. The original movie thread (here somewhere) has ALL the pictures of ALL the prototypes used.

Looking at the first frame of that video and it looks like it is not an M3. The fake brake vent behind the front wheels is more like the 4er style than the M. It is also set lower and the body crease does not run into it.

Edit: Upon closer inspection, I looks like I'm wrong about that.

Like TC or not he did some crazy stunts himself for this movie. Hanging off the side of a plane is no joke even for a stuntman.

It wouldn't be at all surprising to find that they used several variants of the 3-series for all these stunts.

Performing a stunt that will unquestionably destroy the car in short order? Go cheap.

Driving the car down stairs? Going to want more suspension travel, plus some more sidewall on the tires.

Hollywood stund coordinators are no joke. They know well in advance what stunts they'll be doing and what kind of kit they should bring.

I know someone who met TC at a benefit. They said that he was very cool and extremely likable. A little high on the bro-scale, but overall a lot of fun to be around. Sucks that he's got such a crazy ass belief system.

In my mind, I now think "Tom Cruise was here" when I see these pics.

The video has some pretty sweet takes and knew right away he was using some kind of 18" (17"?) rims going down the stairs on the still image. Something about the pic though makes me think he was using some M3 mule than the real thing.

Movie magic? I'm guessing they might have cracked a few of the 19" rims going down those stairs so they had to switch to a smaller rim/thicker tire combo.

Hate to say it but those are 17 inch F30 Sportline rims (styling 392)...

Hope they edit those out of the movie because it looks absolutely ridiculous.
Maybe not for the average viewer but still.

It looks like, at a minimum, they're using a different suspension set up and wheels/tires. The shot of the car accelerating hard down the straight shows the front end coming up way higher than I've seen a M3 do on any test review/track driving video.

I don't think it is impressive at all considering TC is a Scientologist. Thus, he has the ability to fly w/o any aids what-so-ever. If he lost his grip he would have simply flown on his own controlled manner safely to the ground.
