295/30 and 315/30 Toyo RRs on 18x10 et25 with 5mm shim and 18x11 et44 no shim.

Car rotates wonderfully now! The 275/305 combo pushed like a pig.

We actually dialed out just a little compression out of the rear shocks just to secure the rear a bit more in corner entry. Also tried to stiffen the front sway bar but it just muddied the turn in. Maybe we could have kept it a bit longer and just tried to get the nose down more but it felt unnautural.

This car seriously feels like my E36 track car now the way it turns. However, don't feel that a 295/30 square setup would be better except for the ability to rotate front to back.

Very proud of my better half! This is not her fastest laptime ever... but shows her confidence in braking and throttle application. The car setup is the most neutral it's ever been. She is still driving with full traction control on as the car is so much more eager to turn than it was before but working toward MDM. 131mpg on the front straight at NCM is C6 territory. And 70mph entry at Turn 1A is on par with my e36.

Her "driving coach" is just having her work on maintenance throttle just before apex and finding when to apply full throttle. Basically he wants her to max out the throttle application after every apex no matter how short it is... maybe just for a split second but the pedal should hit bottom.

To accomplish this he had her do some figure 8 exercises on the skid pad with no traction control to let her find the correlation between throttle, brake, and counter steer while cornering on cold and hot Toyo RRs. Through it all she also realized when the e-diff locks and how it adds grip when you want it.

Needless to say she burned through the rears! Wish I had video of that.

The reason this is a journal... covering not only the build but also day-to-day. Left front hub making noise. Was only able to hear it because I took the rotor and pads out. 19k miles on car.

Took me 2.5hrs leisurely from wheels up to wheels down to replace both front hub assemblies. The left side is shown in the video but the right side also had some noise but only 25% of the volume. Is it me or does the old hub look like it was getting hot?

I was not able to use my cordless impact to remove them due to space constraints. I used a breaker bar along with a 2" extension for a couple of bolts on each side.

This is the best the car has ever been. That push you see in video was intentionally put in because wifey feels “safer” with it. We can dial it out with dampers but at this point don’t really need to. It makes the Toyos chatty at the limit and you can still squeeze in some torque to get the rear to rotate when needed. Me driving 3 laps in a row in advanced group (open passing). Was holding off a GT3 behind me the entire time which is why I spent so much time in my mirrors.

Tried purple crack for the first time running 295/315 Hoosier A7 scrubs on Apex 18x10 and 18x11 SM10s. And yes, they really are like crack!

6sec faster than her personal best on Toyo RRs and her line isn't perfect or anything... in fact, straight aways speeds are 2-3mph slower than usual and still crushed her Toyo RR times without any fuss! Only catch is that she can only run 2-3 hot timed laps before she has to pit in and let the tires cool. They start to feel greasy quickly.

Wifey (black helmet, mine is white) ran a new personal best and new fast lap for the car (with one of us driving) at NCM with a 2:20.25!

On RE71Rs, the brakes would easily over power them, on Toyo RRs, it was a more even match up. But against the Pirelli's, the APs actually have to work a bit. Ambient temp on test day was 55 deg F and cloudy. The tires have grip for days! And are super consistent. My wife dropped 3 seconds from her personal best and was able to do so for 4 laps in a row. 3 laps being within 0.1 sec of one another.

So if you're not already on these tires, stop, do not pass go, get some!

Awesome, looking at doing the same, what spring rates are you running? Are you running an upgraded sway bar?

350/600 standard TCK springs. H&R front bar on softest setting. Thinking of trying the original bar at Mid-O.

So many folks like stiff springs… we’re not one of them. Yes, these springs are too soft for these tires but certainly not the RRs.

No changes to the car as other projects have our attention. But my wife did receive this in the mail. Was super excited and got to eat the chocolate!!! A post worthy of the journey with this car.

Thanks for this great thread! I also came from an e36 track car and will be picking up my F82 M4 next week. I'll slowly be converting it to a street/track car. I'm in Nashville and I'll be looking for you at events at NCM this year.

Thanks again,
Kevin

There's no reason to rush an F8X track build. The car is extremely capable pretty much stock. The more track prep you make it the faster you will eat consumables. This is the exact reason we both have lower powered track cars in addition.

Ok ok ok... back to BMW content. Picked up a set of Fall Line rear upper control arm solid bushings Black Friday 2021.

I thought these were going to be a straight forward install but ended up being a total pain. You can't really get a ratchet on the 18mm bolt heads. You have to basically use open ended wrenches. Scratches on subframe are from where I tried using a ratchet with 18mm socket. The worse was getting the bolt out of the rear most arm. The sway bar is in the way, and mine is still stock with the stock rubber bushings. So swinging it out of the way involved 2 ratchet straps to the subframe and the bolt still required a lot of effort to get back in the hole.

The bushings very high quality! Hoping these help the rear transition from gripping to sliding "smoother" as there will be less rubber back there. But I think the real solution is a solid dual diff mount.

Awesome. Rear is gonna feel nice and tight now.

I also ended up using a ratchet strap to move the rear sway bar out of the way — it was the only way to get the upper control arm bolt out/in without dropping the subframe.

I got the idea of using a ratchet strap while doing a suspension swap on a Toyota 4Runner. It's cool when gearheads come to similar solutions on their own.

Hi,

Amazing thread!

Can you tell me more about the

Gts steering
Gts mdm
And most importantly, the Gts differential ?

I have a bmw m2c track car I want to do this with but most reviews online seem to be from people who street drive their cars.

Any feedback from an experienced track driver like yourself would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

You really need try each and see. We still weren’t really happy with GTS MDM and found that simply turning traction control completely off is the only way to go. BMW MDM is not in the same league as modern Porsche’s or even GM products.

I also think that no matter what you do with the steering, it will never feel truly connected. We still run the regular civic steering program.

I know this thread hasn't had any activity for 6ish months, but I just joined and live in the Louisville area. Driving an M3 competitor, but really appreciating learning from others who track 3600lb+ sedans!
