This type of intercooler sucks during prolonged use, I have experience on the Audi platform. Yes the initial charge is much lower for a longer period of time but what happens is the water gradually heats up and causes the intake temps to rise. Once they get to a certain point there is no way to cool the water back down and let the intake temps cool down like letting the car sit on a traditional intercooler or taking it easy for a lap or two. Water takes a long while to cool down as well so once that point happens your track day is done

Ya, it'll produce some good power and torque, but it's nothing special in any regard. It will probably be a 3.6L TT I6 making 450HP and redline at 7k. Not impressive at all. When you're starting to charge prices near the GT-R for your car, you need to up the performance ante here; espsecially when $30k American Muscle keeps up with you on the track. The GT-R now gets 545HP from a 3.8L TT V6, and is called the Baby Veyron/Godzilla for a reason. If you're gonna cheap up on beautiful NA racing engines and high red lines, you better bring us more power instead. 450HP is barely worth noting in the performance world today.

After saying all this, I will probably end up getting myself the F80 and doing ED on it. I just worry that BMW is becoming too soft and pandering to the crowds rather than their diehard niche. You win over the crowds by winning over the niche people; that being us performance enthusiasts for M division.

Time will tell.
We agree on the topic of skimping on R&D. I'm holding my judgement until it releases but if there isn't much new technology in there, or if the engine isn't different enough (higher displacement), I'll be disappointed.

But first, how can you say the price is near the GT-R which starts around 100k where this car will start around 60k? That's a nearly 40% difference and I can say I might be in the market for this vehicle and DEFINITELY not a GT-R due to the price alone.

About the American muscle, I feel like a lot of people buy these high performance german cars and not their american counterparts because I feel like a lot of people are looking for the total package. Some American cars match these cars in performance but dont provide the total aural experience and luxury. How many times have we heard people complain about the cheap-o interior on american cars?

Remember an M3 is not a go-fast machine, it's a highly emotional and high precision tool (or at least we expect it to be lol). My E46 M3 is dated as many "regular" cars have 333 horsepower now. To top it off it's a vert so its not the fastest car out there. But I don't get the same feeling driving my friend's Camaro that I get from driving mine. Its just different man.

I'm not sure if I'll buy this new one though unless it gives me that same feeling.

NoNoNO. Like this:

Now this is a proper sounding ///M power plant. When the intake is louder than the exhaust, its heaven!! Don't mind the valve cover......I took an S38 one with the COP's and cut the middle ones out and welded it back together......

Lovely. Thanks for the pics / details!

Sadness for the lack of an NA V8, but oh well. And wow, yes, cramped.

Interested to see what the production engine bay looks like (if it'll be the same, or cleaned up and organized a bit).

If this resembles the final look, they need to go back and redesign. I don't like the fart can sound nor the backfire during shifts. I'll stay with my V8.

Being that "50-50" weight distribution (or as close to it as possible) has been one of the constants with BMW over time, i doubt they'll go Audi or Porsche on us and change that up. As far as the solid feel, I think that has more to do with the seals used and the tightness of the seams than just heavy materials being used to make up for that. Craftsmanship is where that makes a difference.

This comment made me laugh. Have you not seen M54->S54... minus the individual throttle bodies they are very similar. Same goes for the E36 with the S50 and M50 which are almost the same as well... The only car to break that mold has been the E9x with its unique engine.
S54 is a cast iron block. M54 was aluminium. The engines are completely different other than cylinder configuration.

Only 450 horsepower? It better be able to hit 550-600 with a tune. The m5 engine can hit 725 with minor bolt ons. My current e92 wis already faster than this thing if it only has 450 with minor weight savings. This could be a real disappointment. No V8 and only 30 more horsepower = downgrade in my mind not upgrade.

People's reaction to changes can be scary sometimes .. and in a very near future we shall see comments such as:

"it's growing on me"

"actually it's not bad"

"i'm liking it day by day"
