AA Single Midpipe or Custom Res/Secondary Cat Delete?

Hey Guys.

I'm currently FBO minus a midpipe. I really miss the sound of hearing my turbo(s) from my N55 - so a midpipe looks to be the missing piece of the puzzle from numerous videos that i've heard.

I actually like a bit of rasp as it reminds me of my old FBO e46 m3. What i do NOT want is drone. the car still has secondary cats (stock midpipe) and stock muffler.

I'm currently debating between the AA single midpipe or just doing a "custom" midpipe (see attached). The 2 main factors are performance loss (or gain) and drone.

From what i've seen/read is that the AA single midpipe causes a loss due to the sizing actually being smaller. I do not want to go down this route as the car will most likely be built with bigger turbos in the future. Does this midpipe cause drone?

The other setup (see attached) is the setup i was considering as well, but obviously would rather not chop up the exhaust system as much as possible. Does anyone run this setup with catless downpipes? how is the sound and/or drone?

I've gone down both the XPipe + secondary cat delete route as well as the single midpipe route…

Xpipe - not noticeable at low RPMs but increase in bassy metallic sound at WOT and higher RPMs. Slight rasp increase over 6000rpm (it's more of a deep barking sound more than rasp actually). I'd describe this sound as "S55+" in that it emphasizes the traditional sound with more volume.

Single mid - more bass throughout the entire rev range. It's definitely a deeper and SMOOTHER sound. I prefer bass to bark so this set up appealed to me more than the Xpipe. I also like how smooth it was all the time as opposed to it being dependent on my driving style. I'd describe this sound as "S55 Post-Puberty" in that it is recognizable as an S55 but just emphasizes the bassy aspects of the inline-6.

get the single midpipe while its on sale.

It sounds better than any dual midpipe, unless you get the equal length.

no loss from the single midpipe, it's just speculations without any data. The dynos posted throughout the years show the opposite

Thank you for sharing. Can you post your exact setup with the xpipe/cat delete?

I'd prefer bass, but will i have drone with catless downpipes and AA single?

Seems like the cat delete/xpipe might be the "quiet" option?

The exact setup was:

1) Two Magnaflow 14156 test pipes to replace the two secondary cats.

2) A Magnaflow X-Pipe 10791 to replace the resonator.

3) Used BimmerLink to keep the valves open all the time (it definitely droned between 3400-3900rpm with the valves open but never when closed). So I eventually ended up leaving it in the default setting because the drone at highway speeds got old. Then, as a substitute, I dropped the rear seats so the sound came through easier which was perfect for me (I still do this as it's the most underrated exhaust mod ever).

Not mine but here is the car with just the secondaries deleted:

Also, not mine but here it is with the resonator replaced with the X-pipe:

Thanks for posting that. I can't seem to find that setup with downpipes though.

Was the drone really bad? I find that there is a tick (10-15% increase in down with my catless downpipes in sport plus, but it doesn't bother me yet. I also drive in efficient, comfort, comfort on the highway - so as long as the drone is non-existent in those settings, i will be fine.

Which setup drones more? Do you have downpipes?

I had high-flow downpipes with that setup. There was no droning in efficient mode at all. But admittedly, it was pretty bad in Sport/Sport+ (in that relatively small 500rpm range)

Nope. I haven't noticed any droning with the Single mid (keep in mind that I don't have catless downpipes so I'm not sure how droning changes with that setup)

It'll sound something like with the downpipe:
