My decision after our chat was simply due to the CR1 being a 200TW tire. I figured, hmm, this tire competes with the A052 which I heard was very fast, and looks like the extremely fast Trofeo R; and the A052 as well. So I knew it was fast and had a higher wear rating than the AR1, so in theory has to be even closer to the NT01 in wear compared to the AR1.
It being 4 or 5 years newer than the AR1 also gave me the thought that perhaps its just an advancement of the AR1, so either faster or better wear, either of which is a plus.

Phil also mentioned that a driver he knows was doing a comparison of the CR1 to the A052 last month at VIR, and that the CR1 was apparently just a smidge slower, but with much better wear.

*I just read elsewhere online that it's the AR1 compound with the Trofeo R/A052 thread
Great info, thanks. I've also been contemplating what's next after NT01 -- but, I also just changed suspension, so am reconsidering just sticking with NT01 for another round so I can really isolate the effect of changing just the suspension. And it's really hard to beat the wear characteristics of the NT01. Stupid slippery slope....

Were you on the 275/35 NT01 for the front by chance? If so, can you share whether the 275 NT01 and 275 CR-1 are similar in width in real life side by side? At least some of the AR-1 sizes have been reported to run narrow

Yes, I ran the 275 NT01 up front. I still have them mounted so I can take some photos side by side. Maybe I'll do that this Saturday.

Sorry for posting this so late... This is the C&D Lightning Lap layout, all 4.x miles of it. My goal was to go under 3:00 but it was simply not possible due to traffic and my “host” duties. I was helping a group of advanced/instructors familiarize with the track (new to them) and in the Advanced group it was criminally packed with lots and lots of boring traffic. Were it not for my friends I would have requested the instructors group.

Anyhow, I only had one clear lap for time (really) and it’s the best I could do. But I was feeling in my bones the 3 min mark would have fallen with another 2-3 clear laps, I was doing well and picking up meaningful time in the infield.

Anyhow, videos were compromised because a) either my camera mount would droop, or b) the mic wasn’t working, or most of the time c) both happened at the same time.

Maybe next year.

Temps in the upper 70 and low 80s I think. Had a session with a former BMW chapter lead and instructor and he gave me very good advice. Dropped under 2 min in the second only event I’ve done at PittRace. Had a small off as well in the last session of the second day after 30min of running, never again.

I think I have some videos, will try to identify this particular session.

Road Atlanta is so awesome, I can't way to go back there.

@ADC How did the A052 hold up for you? I saw they have 275/35/19 sizes now!

I only got 1 more day from them at VIR, and the performance in that day had dropped off significantly. I’m running 2:09-2:08-ish at VIR full with a decent tire but I could only do 2:11 in the best sessions. Then in the afternoon it dropped off to 2:14 for the Happy Hour session, and at the end I was seeing cords on one of the front tires so I stopped.

This set of 265/295x18 did 1 mild day at Summit Point for scrubbing in, then 2 hard weekends at PittRace and VIR (4 days), and the final day at VIR. Based on this I’d says they have 4 solid days in them for hard running, and you could perhaps squeeze in another day with lower performance.

They do behave more consistently than the NT01 during a session, come up to pressure/temp much faster, but don’t last as long. Are they quicker? Yes they felt quicker in the peak performance window but you need to match it with favorable conditions (track temp, no traffic etc).

I’ll try something else next time.

Similar feedback on A052 295 sq and noticed the drop in lap times started at about the 7th session. Dropped significantly by the 10th session.

Goodyear SC3R 285 sq very similar in wear, but the drop in lap times is better/slower. Maybe three or four more sessions before similar degradation in performance . SC3R in 305’s 19 would be super interesting and may try to fit them next.

Really great driving! I think you had a 2:16 if you gave a little up at turn 1A and committed to going over the rumbles at turn 10.

Maybe soften the compression on front dampers just a little. I can't drive this fast but others (one being the resident pro at NCM) who I can't name or share the VBOX video here have taken my F80 to 2:16 and said he was being conservative.

I was there that weekend but busy pulling the head off my E36. Everytime I rode by no one was near your car.

Nicely done. Just 1.6 back of Pilgrim in a CS on Cup 2s (faster than SC3) and CCB. You must have just about gotten the maximum.

Wasn't enough for a podium!? SC3 can't be the fastest tire option in class.

Oh yeah guarantee there is 2:16's in the car and probably 2:15's with a better driver and/or more seat time. It was my first time back there in 2+ years and first weekend there in the M3. My target time was 100% Pilgrims haha, I was a little disappointed to not be a little closer but I haven't won Daytona so I'm ok with it in the pleb car haha.

I was so hairy into T1 on that lap that I missed the shift down into 3rd and you can kind of see the lag as I'm coming out of 1B lol.

Never really had confidence through T5 and I would have like to been closer to 100mph on my min speed through there. Speeds were a little low through 7/8/9 and 15/16/17 too. I bet there is a second there.

Also went to 4th too early going back onto the front stretch which cost me a few tenths too.

Sounds like a bummer on your E36, were you going to run GLTC? As far as not being around the car, usually a good sign when we aren't touching the car all weekend haha! Did you check out Ranvek's E36? mind blowing that he put down a 2:13 in it... dude can friggin wheel!

I have CCB calipers but I don't think I'm getting enough mu out of the DS1.11 pads. Might try switching to something more aggressive in the front (waiting on the 3.12's to come out for the M2C).

I was supposed to be on Falken RT660 for this event but they got hit with all the shipping delays. I think the Falkens are going to work a little better for this car and can't wait to try them. Pretty sweet to run entire sessions on the SC3 and not have any drop off though!
