In other news, let's say someone wanted to drill one of the longest sub-sea tunnels on the planet in, say, the middle of the north atlantic. and then maybe not just one tunnel, but a tunnel with a roundabout under the ocean so you could pick which island you wanted to drive to. Ugh, GME & Robinhood ... one thing I'll note in case anyone doesn't know about these new trading platforms:

if you buy equities via any platform with free trading YOU DON'T OWN THE STOCK, the platform does. That is, if you set up a Robinhood account you're essentially giving them your money and they give you an IOU for whatever the value of the stock you "buy" is, but they actually own it. Basically RH batches up all the orders for, say, GME and then buy it all in their name at the end of the day... this is why they had to limit GME trading: they didn't have enough money to fund transactions with THEIR broker. This means if that company goes titsup you get nothing because you never owned anything.

I guess this is ok if you're a gambler since RH is no different than a bookie in that you're trusting the bookie to pay you if you win, but if he can't you're out of luck because YOU didn't place the bet, he did.

Tech is growth silly! If you're looking for something easy (you had mentioned before) I'd pick a good fund with a very low fees ... a great overall growth fund is Vanguard's VUG (they have a value fund too) which has done awesome.

If you want an actively managed fund with good names in it (now) then ARKK is the new hotness ... I like all of their stuff.

Fine, the fee for a membership is 50 paid to your local shelter, animal or humans.

All of us need to cough up except me since we don't have shelters here but I'll put in 50 hours of labor for the women's shelter I do that freaky mildly helpful thing with. I'll kill you all if I have to mope up blood for this 50 bucks thing.

Seriously though, I had friends who were laid off by the state (during the pandemic) and were relying solely on unemployment benefits to get by. In CA, that's right on the line. Others were in the service industry and had small businesses doing contracting work that just dried up.

Yeah, I hear you - I def know people who've been laid off and pretty much spent the last year networking people ... I'm probably only a 15 min drive away from you (unless you live far up the peninsula or in Marin or east bay), so we probably have similar experiences, but it seems to be an odd environment out there: on the one hand, TONS of jobs for this type as in ZOMG I can't find ANYONE! ... and then on the other, super qualified people who can't find a thing.

And then some surprises, like I know this one chick who worked part-time at a law firm doing 'event planning'. Last April I thought for sure she'd be out ... and it was touch-n-go for a few weeks ... but then she started coordinating all their zooms and market-type stuff and now she's been promoted and they're hiring her an assistant.

This lockdown will have lasting changes ... disinvest in HQ, buy the home - I think that'll be true for a long time.

We live in strange times. It really is a world where anything is possible and the existing order is turned on its head. Things are in flux all the time it seems nowadays.

Unemployed people literally on their last paychecks, yet there are people running around in brand new Taycan turbos. Bitcoin millionaires, poor homeless people on the street at the same time. A little voice in my head is saying that eventually all of this leads to no good but I have no sense of what that will look like.

I've been noticing a lot more of the latter, in and around the city centers and near parks. I've come to point of realization that if I have some monies to spare, helping your fellow man makes you rooted and grounded in the real world. These contrasts exist but never so starkly in these times is it so evident.

Totally counts, and I have to pay come to think of it.

I went to our basements Anna cave just now to fetch a new pack of socks I've hidden there cuz socks is the most precious thing each morning in my household. Though I go to that part of the house almost daily, it is still striking to realize my tools are in order and there is no weird restoration project spread on the floor.

I'm the messiest person in the world. Tools being on shelves and in boxes means they've not been used. When ever I'm doing something the whole space looks like unabomber paid us a visit. Hubby has been working from home for a year so basically I've done nothing for a year. I could even see the floor. This has been a confusing morning, I need a vacation now after realizing I've been on one for a year now.
