The turbos run in parallel on the S55, thus you cannot add/combine the boost levels.

By running turbos in parallel, you get the same boost (compression ratio), but you double the mass flow.

Running them in series (sequentially), allows to combine the boost (multiply the compression ratios) of the turbos but for the same mass flow as one turbo.

Note: I over simplified for clarity, but the principle still applies.
