The f82 designers had more freedom, so they went with a higher "safety margin". All suspension components/ geometry is otherwise identical. So the m3 is not sitting any lower in terms of ground clearance. |

The M4 is actually lower than the M3, by 1.6".
The rear fender gap on the M3 is less than the M4 because of the different shape of the rear fenders.

Roof line. They both share the same chassis, hence both have the same ground clearance. But the M4 also has a lower Cg.

Yup. This is true. M4 has a lower roof line and the M3 has wider fenders by 4mm on each side; or 4mm total. I forgot.

M3 is 7mm wider than the M4 (3.5mm on each rear fender).

While being factually correct about lower roofline, it is totally irrelevant to the OP question about wheel gap and suspension. :

But contextually interesting - lateral vs linear thinking - let me guess you are an engineer? !

When you put the title in context, my answer is quite pertinent. In terms of "height", the M4 is lower than the M3, be it overall height or Cg height and is equal to the M3 in terms of ride height. The OP is confusing "height" with "fender gap" where the latter is solely dependent on body panel arrangements when comparing the M3 and M4. BTW, I am an engineer by education and profession, hence why I am so anal on details .
