Very detailed write up, great work on using tacky glue for the speaker lining.
You're right on break-in. It took a couple weeks for my speakers to break in (loosened up). BavSound needs to release those replacement subs soon. |

Do you think it might be better to use more sound deadening? Maybe do the whole door?

It certainly won't hurt since the goal is to try to get the speaker cabinet (i.e., door in this case) as dead as possible (you can test this by knocking on the panel). It just takes more time to cut and apply everything, but the only downside is added weight, which is likely minimal.

Awesome write-up 3er! My untrained ear thinks that HK is good enough, so this is likely something I will not tackle. The picture where you popped off the interior grab handle trim is about as far as I'm comfortable toing myself lol
It appears everyone here who does these extensive write-ups, also wears Nano4.0s

I wonder how the BavSound sounds compared to Bang and Olufesn that BMW puts in the higher number designations?

I'd think that their B&O system would blow away HK w/ BAVSOUND speakers. However, I have yet to hear it short of reading a few reviews that rave about the quality. I find myself to be a Bowers & Wilkins guy, but they don't have many car applications.

B&O is great but not for all types of music. For Rock and Jazz yes but anything with heavy bass, the B&O can't handle all that well

So I ordered these after being very disappointed by the BMW HK system - which is surprising as on the M5 it's awesome.
Had a shop install the speakers as I'm pressed for time at the moment. They were amazed by how good the system is. I was looking forward to hear it. Picked the car up and wow what a difference right away - a little harsh at some frequencies but as the speakers ran-in the harshness evaporates. I use a track that I once heard at a Bose audition to audition most setups as the analogueness of the track real cuts through a wide spectrum of frequency. Angela Johnson - You're here with me. And I couldn't believe how much more clarity there was in the track, the vocalists but also the flute. very impressed by this system given what the cost is. BMW you should acquire these guys had bin that HK nonsense.

I posted the following update on the original thread, but thought it was worth sharing in case it's missed by those of you that already read the review and plan to tackle the installation:
--------------------------------------- After having the system installed for a few weeks, I noticed door rattles on two of the four panels. After further inspection, I found that I flattened a few of the clips when putting the panels back on. This might sound obvious, but be very careful when reattaching the door panels to ensure each clip lines up with its respective hole. Without doing so, you're very likely to flatten a few. I replaced the few that were flattened with some OEM units from Amazon (link here). Surprisingly, they're of higher quality than the white original clips and the foam is a touch thicker. I also found a few original clips in which the thin foam rubber pad that goes between it and the door panel had fallen off during the speaker install. After replacing those (take them from the set you get from Amazon) and putting just a 2" strip of 3M double-sided foam pad between the bottom edge of the door panel where it could rattle against the bare metal, I have been rattle free. I'm not sure which of the fixes actually remediated the problem, but I did not want to remove the door panel again!

Not yet . BAVSOUND is allegedly releasing an upgrade sometime this year. I wouldn't hold my breath, though.
