Toll booths have great cameras...

EZ-Pass wasn't read. At least I got a decent pic out of it. Side note, they use really good cameras. Too bad they aren't color. Looks like a sick filter.

The over 2000 speed cameras scattered through nyc also have good resolution. Have received two tickets in the mail already for going 36 in a 25 (city wide limit). Love how they reduced the limit to 25 from 30 for *safety*

Due to Covid-19, state and local governments are not meeting tax collection goals.

It's not a surprise that speed cameras have been engaged to serve as more energetic tax collection agents.

30 to 25 mph as a safety measure? It would be nice to see a credible traffic study on that topic. This study will be published and available for review by tax payers in 2059 - or later.

They also said that they don't want to make the cameras obviously visible or put signs stating they are there because they want to catch people speeding. It contradicts their goal of getting people to slow down in the school zones that they're installed in for safety. I think more people would slow down in such school zones if they knew the cameras were there. Just like you do when Waze tells you there is a cop nearby.

NYCs definition of school zones is also broad and most of the cameras are not even on streets with schools (where they should be). They're on main avenues or boulevards that are technically within the limits of the school zone and where they can collect more revenue.

don't you love the picture quality the city has when it comes to collecting money .... ever see the quality of the street cameras when they show you a suspect wearing a hat and a black shirt? PS1 quality, can't even see the person

it's terrible. literally crawl through school zones now at all hours cause it's confusing when the cameras can be on/off. doesn't help we have a school zone every 20 blocks here.

Been using Waze for every drive ever since they went HAM on the cameras. My parents got a speed camera literally installed right in front of their home. Hilarious. Time to grow a tree to obscure it's view.

Wish protestors would spray paint the lense of these cameras instead of monuments

It's for pedestrian safety according to NYC. There are probably studies that support this. You do know that kinetic energy increases at velocity squared, right? I'm not arguing in favor of cameras, but I would definitely rather be hit at 5 mph less if I were hit.

They have been planning this years before COVID, fyi.

Monochrome sensors capture a higher actual resolution compared to the equivalent color image sensor because there is no Bayer filter and debayering needed. Probably much smaller filesizes to store too.

Thanks for the details. As a former NY/NJ/CT resident, I don't miss the tunnels, bridges, and pot holes which could only be explained by a below the radar missile testing program of sorts.

The biggest challenge with a traffic advocating a reduction in speed limit from 30 to 25 is bias. With a specific outcome in mind, the author of the study can easily build a case for the reducing the speed limit or build a case for keeping it. These studies are rarely embarked on with "let's see where the data points us" perspective. Rather, secondary agendas always prevail at the end. One of the agendas in uncertain budget times and lower tax collection rates is revenue. It's just the reality, although rarely mentioned.
