Joined the club! '17 M3 (from '14 S4)

My S4 was quickly approaching a big 75k mile service, as well as needing some new suspension bits and possible wheel bearing(s). While I loved the car, it was getting up there in mileage and I was quite hesitant to start dumping thousands into it just to keep it on the road.

So, after a long talk with the wife, I started looking for low mileage M3's to replace it. Like many, the M3 is a 'hero' car that I've wanted for quite some time. After a few weeks of perusing all the different classifieds, I finally found one that met my core needs (low mileage, gray or silver, 6 speed, leather seats with cloth inserts).

I ran the CarFax and called my local BMW dealer to have their service department confirm the VIN met all its service requirements and warranty obligations. That all checked out so I drove an hour to the dealer to test drive it. Needless to say, I immediately fell in love.

I truly want to shake the previous owner's hand. I couldn't find a single ding, scratch, scuff anywhere on the car, inside and out. The leather bolsters on the seats don't show a single sign of wear, despite the car having 7800 miles on it. I'm truly blown away by how well the car was kept. They even left the original plastic covers on the floor mats.

After that, the test drive sold me and I drove it home just a couple of hours later.

I'm new to the BMW world so I've got a lot of research/learning to do. But I'm excited for the new adventure.

And a pic of what it's replacing...

Thank you! Prior to the S4 (which was a DSG) all my previous cars were 5sp and 6sp manuals. The DSG in the S4 was fine but I still found myself driving in manual mode with the paddle shifters pretty much all the time. I can't tell you how many times I'd watch the DSG up/down shift at the weirdest times and think to myself, "WTF are you doing?!?"

I have heard that the DCT in the M3 is better but this time around I decided I needed to get back into a full fledged manual. I really missed rowing my own gears.

And the dark gray was a must have for me. I've owned various different car colors over the years and I've learned that absolutely nothing is as easy to keep looking clean/new like dark gray is.

Nice! I think the dealer probably just put plastic on the mats to protect them.....pretty commonplace.

Thanks guys! I work from home and keep going out just to sneak peaks of it. I can't believe it's sitting in my garage. I haven't been this giddy about a car since I splurged on my first WRX right out of college, 15 years ago.

Awesome! I didn't know these wheels were rare. I love the look. My only gripe is that front wheel gap. However, with how low the front bumper already sits, I don't foresee being able to lower it any further without causing serious damage to the lower front bumper, especially in the winter. I think I'll figure out a good spacer configuration for the wheels and call the exterior good.

Don't get me wrong, I will absolutely miss AWD, especially in the snowy months. And the instant power of the supercharger was nice to have in a pinch. But in my short time with the M3, I can already tell it out handles and out powers the S4 in just about every way. WOT pulls in 3rd/4th just plaster a smile on my face. I can't believe how much I missed driving a 6sp.

The S4 had full stage 2 upgrades and upgraded suspension. But even with that you can tell it just doesn't have the same grunt and much more body roll.

It's very clear why the M3 is the pinnacle of its class. This thing is like nothing I've ever owned. This is the first time I purchased a car without having a list of 10+ upgrades I wanted to do. It's tough to justify messing with perfection.

congrats on the car, I too came from a b8.5 s4 and yes you would have had to replace the wheel bearings plus the expensive 75k service. the f80 is a much better car, enjoy.

Me best friend used to own an orange wrapped b8 S4 with the manual. Stage 2 upgrades. It was a beast!

Don’t worry about snow. Our cars can handle it

alright matey.

to be honest im a big fan of audi from s to rs. im dribbling for long time since i was 20 years old. currently one of my best mate bought an s4 in red and i did test drive. all i can say is s4 is so so easy to drive and go fast with its newly upgraded quattro 4wd. but its too family and too commonon on the street like well dressed gentleman . its not special enough for your own.

having a m car is another story. it can be stealth and can be wild. sometimes it can be a angry yobbo. so many unpredictables happened in various driving situations makes you sweat in hand but it turns out big grin on your face. thats what i like, i suppose, so do you.

I absolutely agree. Especially where I live (just outside of Boulder, Colorado), the amount of A4's and S4's around here is nuts. And they all look the same. I did my best to make mine stand out but it still just looks like a tuned A4. Especially because Audi still throws red "S-Line" badging all over their A4 trims.

I did test drive a B9 S4 and absolutely LOVED the interior tech/comfort. But it's still too numb feeling and generic feeling for a $50k+ performance sedan. The M3 stands out MUCH more from the bland cars around here, and I love that.

I've already experienced this! This is the first non-AWD car I've ever owned. The RWD and power output really made my palms sweat yesterday, when I made a right turn onto the road outside my neighborhood and got on the throttle at about 50% in 2nd. The back tires immediately lost traction and the back end started pulling out to the left. Easy correction and still made me chuckle, but man, this is going to take some getting used to.

The stock tires are getting low on tread. I'm going to have to get some stickier Pilot Super Sports to survive the summer.
