Satellite Radio Popping noise - NBT EVO
Applicable to F82, F33, and F30
No bulletin number

Customer Complaint:
"While using Satellite radio (SDARS) Popping noise heard intermittantly (that's how they spelled it) thru all speakers. Usually able to reproduce the nose when changing channels.

Current Recommendation:
Check for stored faults. Diagnose any related antenna or head unit fault codes. If no other faults are found make no repair attempt at this time. This is currently under investigation.

This is exactly what I thought that sound was.
Like debris hitting the windshield or maybe the dash settling in places.
But it's not a consistent noise for me, happens very seldom but still noticeable.
Not even sure I'll bother bringing it up at the dealership unless it gets worse over time.

Just took delivery of my 2016 M3 last week, and on the ride home from the Performance Center noticed what I assume is this issue...best described like a previous poster said as small rocks hitting the windshield. I will make note of it at my 1200 service, hoping BMW finds a fix soon.

Thanks for posting. The more the attention the better.

Small annoyance for now.

This. Only on Sat. Radio but my issue went away w/out a fix.

I experienced this as well. Not sure if it's related or not. However, when I disabled active sound, the pops and crackles seemed to go away.

Anyone receive a replacement amp? If so, did it fix the problem?

Took the 340 to see my SA about this issue + 1 more (back up camera). Service Tech confirmed there is a bulletin related to aligning XM/Sirius satellites so they can boost signal strength in complaint area. Didn't notice the issue in FM during the short period of time.

Does yours do it via bluetooth? Also any fix after 1200 mile service?

Mine does this also only when connected phone through USB port and only certain songs. Same phone connected via Bluetooth -- no issues. Haven't listened to satellite radio much but the one time I did it was fine, no issues.

Glad I finally found this thread I thought it was just our car! Tried a different USB cable to no avail either.

Not through blue tooth but after my service was complete. They (Bmw genius) adjusted the settings and the weird sounds went away. I turned the volume up very loud and different variations In-between. I got nothing. So for now the issue is gone.

I'm not aware of what settings were actually adjusted

Speaker noise

I noticed the same thing, but more like a static screechy noise with high notes, with certain songs and with my iPod connected via USB. I just had my 1200 mile service and not sure if I want to go back again this week. I'll give it some more time to get a better feel for it.

That's interesting. I actually just came on here to post that the pops and crackles seem to be going away for me. I'm at 3k miles now, when I picked up the car it was close to every other song having them but now it goes a long time before I hear anything. This may sound stupid but could it be some kind of speaker break-in behavior? I've never had a new car let alone BMW with HK so not sure if this is a possibility but I'm glad it's better. Could all just be placebo too...

Same exact thing with me. Popping while plugged into USB, nothing when listening through BT.

No updates from anyone? Mine is still doing this intermittently. So annoying -- I have a cross country road trip next week that I'd like to be plugged in for. As an aside does anyone know if you can be plugged into USB but play audio from Bluetooth? It doesn't seem to let me but that would be a lifesaver

I had the amp replaced in Oct or Nov and it drastically reduced the frequency of the pops. I still hear one every so often though.

Just picked up a 16 m235i and it does it from time to time. I think it might be a Sirius problem...

Picked my car up this weekend. Did it starting on the way home from the dealership. Any actual fix other than replacing amps or speakers which cut down on the frequency of it?

Stop listening to Sat Radio worked for me. Plus the sound quality was awful.
