I forgot how powerful the Sun is here ... in Cali I can be outside for hours without getting near a burn #vertLiving, but here ... I went for a mid-day swim for 40 minutes and I got a little burned! My wife, who's typical Scandinavian translucent got slightly red without ever going into the Sun! And speaking of birds, yesterday there was a fucking rooster outside waking us up at 5am - my point is, roosters aren't fast enough to outrun a well thrown coffee cup. |

My 2 cents is, you have to decide why you want a luxe watch, and when / how / where you'd wear it ... so, for example, you might want a sports watch for your first watch because it's more of a daily driver rather than dress watch which will be more of a chauffeured bentley. Digging a bit deeper, most people want a luxe watch for a few reasons: (1.) They appreciate the mechanical art, design, and history / romance (2.) They want chicks (3.) They want insecurities-bane jewelry: "look everyone, I am somebody!" (the spin on this would be it's a trophy of one's achievements or it signals taste and style! ) As the old saying goes, "show me a man with a Rolex and I'll show you an inferiority complex" (4.) Money laundering / corruption / bug-out insurance (5.) "investing" - ugh, luxury items aren't investments. Anyway, nothing wrong with the first 3 IMO, we're all human. Personally I've been on quite the watch journey over the last decade and, long story short, I think I've decided I like my watches like I like my cars: German. Sure, I like my M4 because it's fancypants, but if it were just that it's not worth it for me ... the larger reason I love the M4 is because it's an overbuilt tool, a beast that can take hours and hours of abuse and then drive home like a milk run. THAT'S worth it. So after years of watch test runs and consideration I've concluded I want the exact same thing out of a watch: a purpose built tool that can take maximum abuse and still perform. That's when I started looking beyond the usual suspects (Rolex, Patek, etc) because where and why am I going to wear a $25k watch who am i trying to impress? I still love those watches, but if I'm not going to wear it, then I'm better off funding trips to Switzerland and taking factory tours, going to roadshows, etc than buying one - which is why I could never make a decision. Then I ran across Sinn ("Zin") dive watches - they're what Rolex used to be: a tool you wear while you're actually doing stuff. And they're super German. The U1 is made of submarine steel: stronger, corrosion resistant, anti-magnetic. Then they do some magic to that steel that makes it 4x harder than rolex steel, and then you can get it PVD coated that makes it 5x harder. The movements are shock-proof, anti-magnetic, and accuracy certified to actual DIN standards. They're depth-rated to at least 500 meters which is important not just for depth, but for diving into water which simulates depth. There's all kinds of other tech you can buy in them too like water vapor absorption, oil-less movements, etc. And further, you're not paying for marketing, branding, and sponsorships. The downside is, of course, few know what a Sinn is - there's only one retailer in the US (and only 1 per country globally except Germany). So if you want a watch as a look-at-me thing, Sinn is definitely not your first watch, maybe not one you get ever. Anyway, at some point this year I'm thinking I'll buy 2 or 3 in different flavors, and I may buy a few g-shocks, and then over time i'll get others, but I'm probably off Rolex, Omega, etc for a long time, maybe forever. Glad you asked?

Currently, my daily watch would be between my Hamilton Khaki Aviator and my simple Fossil watch. So, anything like a Rolex would be a tremendous jump from what I am typically used to but I definitely want at least one luxury watch on me for certain, unique situations. The one I am looking at is the one you posted initially, between that version of the Rolex Submariner Date and Submariner Date (Oystersteel and yellow gold). Apparently making it gold = 5k more... If I ever do it, I would want it to be what I want. P.S. Happy Mothers Day to our mothers. And Lups

A luxury product is a depreciating asset, like a car, so not an investment ... but it possible for depreciating asset prices to rise given demand like the 1M coupe, although one is speculating on the demand and resulting value, and speculating is gambling not investing. And, since I'm on vacation, you're gonna get the G-Man's theory on why the economy is fucked, thus I'm definitely not speculating on stuff, and my investing is broken out to short-term (like 25 years) low volatility stuff, and long-term (more than that) market risk stuff. Here's the deal: (1.) Impending entitlements explosion, blah blah blah enough said. (2.) More important: financialization of the corporations in the stock market See, earnings per share of, say, S&P500 companies has grown 11x since 1990, and that number is old so probably more. I've been working during that time and I can tell you for a fact I'm not 12 times more productive. Ask your father if he thinks he can do in hour what took him a day and a half in 1990. There's no way. So what explains why companies are so much more "productive", i.e, profitable? It's a mystery. some people say technology, but again, 12x more productive? No. Now consider what happened to US corporations last year: we cut their corporate taxes 43%! And to pay for that we borrowed the money from future tax payers. So what can US businesses do with such a massive windfall? They can buy stuff (real estate, machinery, etc), they can buy other companies, they can pay dividends ... or they can do a share buy-back... Guess what? 2018 was a record year for share buy-backs! $1.1 trillion! Why's that a big deal? Because buy-backs happen (usually) when execs think their stock is cheap, i.e., they're undervalued. But guess what happened? lots and lots of those same execs that voted for the buy-backs sold their own stock into the buy-back! Speaking of investing, if you owned stock you thought was under-valued why in the World would you sell it?? Maybe it's because you know your company isn't 12x more productive and if taxpayers are willing to take out a loan and give it to your company (to keep share prices high), you better get out while the gettin's good, right? And that's just exactly what's happened. Financialization is profit margin growth without productivity growth. So if your father's labor isn't 12x more productive - and nobody else's is either - where does the profit margin come from? Government policy that keeps gifting corporations with more and more ... which, at some point, will become impossible. Now will that mean a giant crash or a small crash followed by a lost decade? Or lots of small crashes? Who knows, but globally it can't continue, nor can it continue in the US. In any event, if you have money in the market you don't want to lose half of because you'll need it in the next 10-20 years, I'd get it out. As for Rolexs, they might not do too bad because I'm out of the short-term market, as are others, and if there is a big crash or an extended small one and demand on those Subs drops well below MSRP, I'm a buyer! TLDR: [ not available ]

I thought about investing in stock little by little but I have never pulled the trigger as I have no experience with it and just think about it. Not to mention I grew up during the long economic recession, that wasn't something that came to my mind to begin with. I feel like I would do a Rolex only when the time is right and there is an occasion for it, but so far there hasn't been one. Granted I don't know where to really buy one yet or the process but maybe when I know I have an occasion for it then I can do so. I get the feeling the US economy is going to pop sooner or later due to all the nonsense a certain person is currently doing. Even though I actually agree with the China thing, China has been for, far too long taken advantage of the West while saying the exact opposite. However, all that crap he has done thus far has damaged multiple class groups (that isn't his millionaire friends). Regardless of all of that crap, I don't seem to care much as... honestly I have better things to worry about right now.

simple simple simple: Vanguard index fund (VTI). done. if you want to get fancy, add an international fund (VXUS). Fancier yet, add a total bond fund (BND). Seriously, that's all you need to do. And if you're afraid the market will melt down and want to be ultra safe get a treasury fund (VFIUX). This is set and forget it stuff. You absolutely should not be out of the market because you'll miss out on the most powerful force in the universe according to Einstein: compound interest. Not beyonce silly. |

Oh, one last note on the economy ...
America is supposed to be the country of rewarding hard work, right? Well, right now with us both working we pay about 49% in taxes and 53% on capital gains like dividends ... but guess what happens if we stop working, that is, drop our labor income to $0? That's right! Our tax bill drops to 0% even if our investment income supports our exact same lifestyle. Which, sitting here in hawaii, doesn't seem too punitive. |
