Anyone who is seriously into tracking will keep a competition prepped car (of whatever type their budget allows) around anyway, and just plays around tracking street cars because it's fun to track your street car commuter sometimes. Doesn't matter if it's a F80, or c63 or model 3 or whatever.

You are right btw, model 3 can lap until the battery runs out, and engineers have told owners to expect 3% worsening in times. So a 1:21 would be a 1:23 or so.
that's a classic deflection and avoidance of original question
we are not discussing anything other than comparing what the Model 3 did compared to the 458, as was brought up in the article

What exactly is the “original question?”

Thx for the vid, got some good info out of it.

Did you consider other Telsa models? How'd you decide on this one?

Is anyone going to trade a 458 for a model 3? Obviously not. Someone who can afford a 458 will just get a model 3 to add to their fleet if they want it.

Are you upset because Motor Trend is suggesting an electric commuter sedan is faster around a track than your 458? LOL

Lighten up. They just wanted to get clicks on their article, and it's always fun to compare the sports sedans to the pure sports cars.

By the way, if the question is how many laps the model 3 performance can do, I can tell you first hand from taking mine to Sonoma it will do a 30 minutes lapping session just fine. The weak link is the PS4S street tires.

Or is there another question you thought I was evading?

Motor trend didn't suggest anything the numbers don't lie
At the end of the day this appliance is trying too hard to be "liked" instead of being different for what it is
I don't own a 458, nor would I ever not the car for me
Why would I get mad ? It's the interwebz
You seem very invested in defending tsla
I just call it how it is
Boring appliance with shoddy build quality and even worst reliability

I appreciate all perspectives. I think some of yours are a bit more subjective. I see the value in both cars mentioned in this thread I originally started. I talk about some of them in my videos below. As much as I've loved my BMW M3, M4 (both cab and coupe), even the I8 I leased, I find myself looking for excuses to drive my Tesla more than any of them. It's just that fun, and advanced, IMHO. Also subjective, sure. But I'd struggle to find it boring.

if you don't own a 458 how do you know you wouldn't be rushing to trade one in for a tesla

I'm invested in trying to help people see past their biases about EVs by sharing a balanced POV about owning an EV and comparing it to my old F80 and my current Porsche

As I type I'm looking back at photos of the light up ///m logos in the front seats of my old car, and chuckling at your comment of "trying to hard to be liked"

Here's Mountainpass Performance's review of Performance Model 3 with Track Mode after racing at Global Time Attack Superlap in Buttonwillow:

They put up time that would've placed them 1st in class, but got disqualified because some protested using a loophole saying they were not using the allowed "fuel". lol

http://globaltimeattack.com/rd3-gta-pro-am-buttonwillow-results/

From the other posts, official competitor Rogers did a 2:00 and Mount Pass driver Amis did a 1:59

Most impressive for me is the Miata with LFX v6 swap that's 1s away from fastest time of the day, and was ahead of the viper and Gt3 in its class.

I won't lie, I'm kind of intrigued by this as a next car option after my M3. Have they started leasing them out yet? Although I'm guessing a buy might be a better prop on these...

Anyone know if visual differentiation like aero or unique colors to the M3P are in the works, besides bigger wheels and brakes?

Call me shallow, but that's one of the things that always drew me to M3s — it's hard to confuse them for a base 3-series (okay maybe the E36).

Not yet, expected by mid next year IIRC.

This. So much this. One of my biggest hesitations is the lack of options such as black headliner, dark or better wheel options (turbine wheels), CF interior trim, sportier seats, etc.

That would be awesome. It's a pretty special car that would benefit from some unique touches. There are so many on the road that they're becoming invisible.

The only current visual differentiators from the factory are the 20" wheels, minor drop, and red brake calipers.

white interior is available on AWD models so isn't a reliable indicator of trim level.

The CF rear spoiler and "dual motor red underline" badge are not yet available.(I am likely going to mount both of those in my garage rather than on the car. )

if you really need that "visual differentiation" I recommend skipping the sedans and getting a wide body 911 with a foot tall fixed rear wing.

I was watching Matt Farah's podcast/youtube where he mentioned how amazing it was that the new model 3 perf can program the front wheels brake regen to create entry oversteer on a corner.

I think the point is that the future of these electric cars is a complete revolution in the way our current "analog" minds work on the track. computers and electric motors are going to make amazing drivers out of all of us it seems.

Still, it is too early for me to make a purchase because I hate awd for a sports sedan/sports car, and the weight- I also am concerned about the drive becoming too numb, and the computers doing too much... so I'll keep driving my horse drawn carriage til they can address these things for me.
