Know your roads
I've gotten at least 4-5 speeding tickets in a span of 3 months until I purchased an R3 Uniden about 2 months ago. While it has saved me many times, it will miss 5-10% of the time. This small 5-10% cluster is mainly when the cop is sitting stationary and leaves the radar off then quickly turns it on to shoot you. Advice here is to know your roads, which I do. I live in the northern suburbs of Chicago and I haven't encountered a real laser but plenty of false signals from hospitals. Believe it or not, K band is still being used in half of these suburbs today, so I do not mute it.
I am thorough when it comes to marking false alarms and notice that all of the good straightaway spots on our highways that are primed for "Mexico" action tend to ring K and Ka band aggressively (2 red bars which is max strength on the R3) yet no sign of a cop in sight. Therefore, my conspiracy theory is that law enforcement puts these "beacons" out there as a deterrent altogether. Smart ... so if going triple digits, make sure you have line of sight a good distance ahead. Funny story: I have heard from other local M owners that one town purposely still uses X band because they know everyone ignores it. I thought that's pretty cost effective and clever.

Same exact thing happened to me between 10/19 - 1/20. Overall the r3 is pretty good and in my experience better than escort products.

Just traded in my V1 for the new Valentine 1 Gen 2. I quit using the V1 as it was too noisy with all the false alerts from BSM’s. The initial reviews of the new valentinelook very good.

Uniden R7 + Blendmount, and blendmount hardwire kit ran to the rear fuse box (with its own 2A fuse). Someone on here had an amazing DIY that was super detailed.
The blendmount hard wire kit is thinner and is easier to tuck under the lining after wrapping with Tessa tape. |

My R3 didn't help me when I got shot with LIDAR in the Alfa Romeo 4c.... instant felony speeding and reckless driving due to speed. Sold it and took a break from cars

According to Vortex Radar on YouTube, he mentioned the radar detector is only good in certain areas or states only. They all have their short comings.

ESCORT iXc and Redline 360c for me - I have ta few of both. Most good detectors today are pretty good at BSM filtering. What I like about ESCORT is that paired with its database of know noise generators, the system tends to be very quiet. I do get Ka falses every so often, but I really like the R360c. Prior to getting the R360c, I tried a V2. Really liked it but the ESCORT was ergonomically superior for me.

I still have my faithful V1, just installed it on my CS. I sent it in 3 years ago when Valentine was offering an update for $79. I did that and it definitely minimized false alarms but I will update to V1 G2 once they resume taking orders. All I can say is that V1 has saved my hide time and time again .

+1 for the Uniden R7. Came with two mounts, the shorter of which allows you to mount it incredibly close to the driver side sun visor (from the outside the detector isn't visible because it sits inside the tinted, top portion of the windshield)
Tip: you can run the wiring across the head liner to the passenger side > down the weather stripping on the A pillar to below the glovebox > cigarette jack plug that is hidden under the glove box that only stays powered for a minute after the car is locked (instead of dangling a cable to the cig jack in the center console area) If you have an R7, I seriously recommend checking out Vortex Radar's breakdown of which Ka bands to filter/run in your specific state to really optimize performance! Though if your state uses Laser/LIDAR, nothing will save you, short of black magic and jammers. |

Recently, picked up a F83 vert, and looks like investing in a radar detector is a good idea as I am seeing LAPD and CHP extremely active on the roads these days in LA. I am truly a newbie on this topic. No tickets in the last 9 years, so want to keep it that way.
Ordered my first radar detector - V1 Gen2 based on all the good reviews etc. Happy to hear experience with V1 G2. Need help with mounting ideas, given that I drive mostly top-down not a big fan of sticking it next to the rearview mirror. Want to see how others' mounted theirs' especially without a roof Thanks!

I'm far from a sensationalist, and I've found that things have gone splendidly with Waze and my eyes. If I ever go back to radar detectors I'd likely go for Valentine One Gen2 as my brother has had good results with it.

I use Waze and the V1V2 and it's an awesome combination. I previously had a V1 for 20 years and only got one ticket with it. I got nabbed with laser and I deserved it.

For those of you with a Max360 — I highly recommend updating the firmware to the latest version if you haven't done so in a while. It takes 10 minutes, is completely free, and it cuts down on the false alerts significantly.

As a follow-up, my Uniden R7 has been absolutely perfect here in CA with the X and K bands turned off. Great detection range.
The R7 made a detection noise I had never heard before yesterday... the one for LIDAR. Scared the hell out of me. Impressed me even more, given that Laser doesn't scatter much and I have it mounted near my left visor. California Highway Patrol... with laser... *shivers* |
