Project Corsa M4 - Time Attack F82 M4 Build

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hello, my name is Matt of Corsa Motorsport, a Huntington Beach, CA based shop where we service and customize BMW/Euros/Exotics. We recently purchased a Mineral Grey 2015 M4 coupe with the intent of building a dedicated shop time attack car to compete in various series throughout 2020 (Global Time Attack, Bimmer Challenge, etc) and of course open test and tune track days.

Delivery

After about 2-3 weeks of searching, I found the perfect candidate. A 2015 Mineral Gray, one owner, with 15k miles on the clock. Here she is the day she arrived on transport from Arizona to Huntington Beach. Just a day shy of Christmas, December 24th.

Prior to receiving the car we already had a decent stock pile of parts ready to go.

Welcome.

Sounds like a fun build, but I always question these aftermarket off-the-shelf aero parts and their alleged positive effect on aerodynamics and handling.

BMW developed bespoke wings for each of their customer race cars, M4 GT4 or the M2 CS R, with appropriate modifications to the front end as well...

Suspension, Brakes, Wheels and Tires

Current modification list:
Motorsport Hardware Race Stud Conversion Kit
CSG CE1/CE2 Brake Pads
Project MU G-Four Brake Fluid
JRZ RS Pro 3-way Coilovers

First mod to go on the car was Motorsport Hardware's Race Stud conversion kit. It makes wheel mounting/removal much easier rather than using wheel bolts.

Up next was brakes. Counterspace Garage came on board and we installed their CSG CE1 pads up front and CSG CE2 pads in the rear. The factory brake fluid was flushed and replaced with Project MU G-Four fluid.

With the JRZ RS Pro-3 ways in hand, we mated the dampers with Swift Springs 10k/20k. Time to get to work.

Motorsport Hardware came on board, and we decided to upgrade to their Race Spec Stud Conversion Kit, which makes removing and replacing wheels much easier than the factory stud design.

Aero & Chassis Mounting

Next on the list was install our aero and figure out our chassis mounting solution for both the wing and splitter. The trunk was slotted and we custom cut aluminum stands to the appropriate height, which places the wing blade at just about roof line. With the wing chassis mounts eliminating easy access to the trunk, we had to get creative with the rear JRZ reservoir placement. Two new holes, a bracket fabbed up and problem solved.

Alignment at Chewerks

Time to have the alignment dialed in. Had the car towed over to Rob at Chewerks and have the car properly aligned. I have nothing but good things to say about Rob from S2Ks to M cars. If you are in SoCal, I would highly recommend him.

Interior & Safety

With the suspension, brakes, wheels/tires, and aero installed, the next step was the interior and safety components before our first track shakedown at Buttonwillow Raceway. We chose the following parts:

Recaro SPG Pro Hans (Driver)
Recaro Pole Position (Passenger)
Sabelt 6-point Harnesses
Studio RSR Chromoly Roll Bar
Macht Schnell Clubsport Seat Brackets and Sliders

While we were at it, we decided to vinyl wrap the OEM kidney grilles in 3M 2080 Gloss Black.

The wing itself is actually made for a GTR. I purchased the wing blade itself as we designed a chassis mount setup for the wing, as well as chassis mounted front aero. I will update the build thread as up to date as possible.

First track shakedown at Buttonwillow Raceway Clockwise 13 config

With the car all set we set out for Buttonwillow. The engine is untouched, and the still on the factory tune. With the coilovers, aero, brakes, wheels/tires and safety, we set out for initial impressions and set a baseline lap time. One thing I should mention is, with the removal of seats, factory dampers, etc, the car had a ton of faults/codes leaving countless lights on and inability to switch to M1/M2 mode or any Sport/Sport+ options, leaving the only option to drive in Eco Mode.

Fastest lap of the day: 1:52.93

CSF Cooling Kit

The car returned to the shop and all of the CSF 3-piece cooling kit had arrived. We knew the cooling system was going to be something we definitely wanted to address early on, and CSF made the decision easy with their customer service and readily available parts. Fitment and finish on all of the coolers were spot on, and installation was straight forward with little to no hiccups. The kit was on the car and ready to be filled within a few hours. We went with CSF because of their experience and knowledge when it comes to developing high quality cooling components and will be our go to once they develop a cooling kit for the Supra as well.

Vinyl Wrap

With the baseline set and first track event a success, it was time to move on to the next step. The gray wasn't cutting it so we decided to wrap the car. The color of choice: Avery SW900 Gloss Yellow. The team got right to work, began disassembling the car, and the wrap was underway.

Thank you, more to come. Still playing a bit of catch up as the build happened rather quickly. I will documenting the entire process of the build and full time attack/tracking season as well.

Thank you. Aside from the coilovers the suspension is still stock. SPL arms are coming soon.

Yes I was. I brought the car over to EAS and they cleared all the codes off of the car. The chassis stabilization error code is the one that will limit selection of drive modes (you will still be able to turn traction on and off). They also cleared the codes from removing the factory seats and installing the bucket seats.

SSR Performance Chargepipes & BMC Filters

Next commonly failed component addressed was the charge pipes. The factory plastic charge pipes are known for cracking and failing. We definitely didn't want any of that on track, so we headed to SSR Performance who was local to us in Orange County and snagged a set of their charge pipes in fashion grey. Shah was extremely helpful and we decided that we would get the SSR Performance downpipes as well shortly down the road. Chargepipe installation was straightforward, and fitment was on point. I used scotch-brite to scuff the where the couplers attach to the pipe for a bit of cheap insurance. While we were at it, we ditched the stock carbon filters for a set of BMC drop in air filters.
