iDrive + Carplay + iOS Update Reliability

I have a 2018 F80 which does not include Carplay. In preparation for having the iDrive firmware updated to support fullscreen Carplay, I added the requisite WiFi antenna to the head unit and purchased the interface cable to allow remote coding....but then I stalled out.

Every time I get ready to pull the trigger on this modification, I come in here and read something about Carplay like "music streaming from Spotify cuts out when I receive a text", or "I upgraded to the latest iOS on my phone and now Carplay is working only intermittently", etc. etc.

In my particular case, I'm currently limping by with an iPhone 11 Pro which is nearing its final days, and I'll likely upgrade to the latest phone in the near future. So what's the rub....once I have the latest iPhone / iOS and I have the iDrive system updated to include full screen Carplay, is it going to function properly or should I save the money?

CarPlay on mine ( id6 retrofit ) has been stable on iPhone 10,13,14 and 16 models.

Interruptions or stopping them is managed within IOS. However , if you use Waze and recently google maps you’ll need notifications on if want to be alerted for “traffic monitoring “ type enforcement agencies. In which case you will get interruptions in music for all of its usual stuff.

I have a 2018, OEM carplay, full car iStep updated 9/20/24 (included NBT version update) and then i bimmercode'd full screen carplay. iphone 13 on newest ios (18.1?). In this car using spoitify, I'd say carplay drops almost never. Compared to my other cars (Lexus, Subaru with aftermarket sony headunit), the carplay works the best in the f80.

Also regarding notifications, the way I handle carplay is to have my phone on silent (texts and phone calls will still come through but wont play a sound through carplay), and then have my Waze/Maps on "notifications only" so it wont announce stop music for turn by turn directions, but it will tell me if a cop or a pothole is ahead

I had a problem with CarPlay connectivity issues at first. I believe that I unpaired my iPhone, turned off CarPlay, turned CarPlay back on and then re-paired my iPhone. After that it has worked fine about 98 percent of the time. The other two percent it connects but there is no audio connection on the phone for some reason.
