Gents,
What is the most cost effective way to get a replacement key?

Do you mean the key together with the fob? An aftermarket keyfob from a car key locksmith is a cheaper option but a keyfob from a BMW dealer will be better/OEM quality.
If for some reason, you want just the key (blade), this will be the cheapest.

If your key blade is still ok, then order just the fob. An aftermarket one will look just like the OEM but the quality won't be up there. If you want an OEM one, just contact a BMW dealer and they'll arrange it for you. It should be in the range of $US300. It cost me £275 in the UK.

Locksmith, they also carry OEM keys as well. Much cheaper than the dealership. They might not have the silver trim BMW Key as that is an "M" Key.
