I don't think it's the exhaust only. I think the sound is affected by the engine a lot. My 2-cyl Ducati sounds better than any I-4 jap bikes. So Porsche wins because their engine is better. However there are plenty of Porsche guys who say that stock sound is crap and a custom exhaust is a must.....
I have a Cayman S with the Sports exhaust from the factory in it sounds awesome.

And everyone has a completely different opinion on exhaust sound. I think my zx-6r sounds better than any other bike out there, that's my opinion. All that matters is that you like your exhaust note.

Sport exhaust although factory is not stock, the same as M performance parts.

I agree with your statement 100% but forums don't.

I wonder if they changed the tuning as some have speculated, for the 2016s. I actually enjoy the sound and do not feel the need to upgrade the exhaust unlike on my E60 M5, which was very subdued. Active sound doesn't sound as bad as I recall which I don't think I will have coded out anymore more. I'm all smiles here!

It's obvious that cloud coverage changed between videos 2 and 4, altering the acoustic resonance the mic picked up. This test is therefore inherently flawed.

Read the thread... 1 and 2 compare and 3 and 4 compare.

Just to give my personal experience, i have driven a 2015 m4 and the cold start indeed does sound like a lawn mower for the first 30 seconds. Otherwise, i loved the exhaust. It takes some time to get used to but you will definitely grow into it in a few hours. When i ordered my 2016 M4, i was a bit worried about the cold start sound. After taking delivery of my '16 M4, that lawnmower noise is completely gone! Even on cold starts the exhaust sounds good. I am fairly confident that BMW has made modifications to address some of the earlier complaints about the exhaust note on the '15's.

That sounds encouraging
Waiting for my 2016 and undecided whether to get the Mpe straight away. Sounds like waiting is the best option

I would definitely wait. I find the exhaust fairly loud in sport mode and don't think i will need an aftermarket exhaust.

Some of that may be the active sound? I personally have a hard time distinguishing between real/fake when giving it a lot of throttle.

It would be interesting to know the percentage of owners that have gone into an aftermarket exhaust

So maybe I'm a little old school but these newer turbo 6 cars just don't have the memorable exhaust sounds from my earlier years. Too many tinny sounds. I'll never forget this 90's Mustang exhaust sound.

But with that you get this "solid" Ford door thunk.

By the way this is way louder than I could live with nowadays.

16 is better because I have it.
everyone in my family (incl. dudes) think my car is broken b/c it sounds so loud. I guess I should tell them "wait till you hear 2015 M3" - that's the broken one ))))))

C'mon...as much as I love Porsche as the next guy let's be honest here...Porsche flat 6s sound like weed eaters when they're cold and in the lower RPM range...once revved up they sound amazing though. Seems like the new turbo engines behaves similar....although, the same came can be said about the S55...
