My used M3 only has one key fob, just go to dealer for the second?
I was bummed to hear my car will only arrive with 1 key fob.
Guessing its gonna cost 400 bucks from the dealer? But, I'm still stoked My 2016 Yas marina F80 M3 w/ remaining factory warranty will be arriving hopefully this sunday! |

When you go to the dealer you'll have to show them a photo ID and the registration for the car showing that it's registered to you. They'll order the key, and yes, it's expensive. They may also charge you to program the key to the car.

iirc, kiesmotorsports stated on F30s forum they could get factory keys for a decent price.

Did you buy from a dealer or a person? I would try to get the seller (whoever it was) to pay for the second key, but especially so if it was a big brand dealer (BMW, Merc, whoever, as opposed to "Nick's Quality Used Cars.")

The last time I purchased a key that was for my E46. I dont know how it is in the U.S but where I am they just need the VIN and the salel order to make sure the car belongs to you. I paid around $250usd.
When I got the key, even thought the blade's cut was right but there was instructions that I had to do also to register the key to the car. For example like open the door, close, windows all the way down then up..etc. I can't remember exactly the sequence but I had to do that. For the F80, when you come to the dealer to pick up the key. You may want to drive the car there at the same trip and ask the advisor to do the key registration for you (if there is one like back in the day). |

the keys are programmed when they are made. You only have to "sync" it with the car by holding the key next to the symbol on the steering column and turning the vehicle on. Don't let the dealer charge you for programming.

Be sure to keep an eye out for your one key as well if you get a second and have that one programmed. I remember a horror story on here where an owner such as yourself was in the same position, and when they programmed the new key it made his old key no longer functional. When they program your new key, make sure you put your old one through it's paces before you leave the dealership!

I have a extra key fob that I've never used. Got it from my totaled CS. Don't know if it will work for you, maybe someone can confirm?

Im not sure either. If be interested if it can be reprogrammed. I think ive heard of this service before but, doubt the dealer can do anything with a different key fob. I think it needs to come from the dealer programmed for your vin already.

It was a big well known dealership from out of state. I asked, they would not budge on anything.

Well, the actual physical key inside the key fob will definitely not fit the driver door keyhole or the glove box keyhole...

Yeah.....I've got to get this done as well. But I do plan on canvassing several dealerships just to see if there is a cost difference. My normal dealership did say it would be right around $400.

You could try contacting the previous owner to see if you can get it from them. When I got mine from the dealer, they didn't remove the previous owner's information from the car.

I got mine (former repo) with only one key. Found owner he said he would look, but never responded further. Kies charges $425 for a key (not sure if blade is cut). Ouch
