Oil Change Cost

I recently took my m4 to the dealer for an out of warranty oil change. I was quoted $240 for the dealer to do it. I felt it was a bit steep so I decided id head over to parts and try to just buy the oil and filter and DIY it. I was quoted $130 for 7 quarts of the oil and a filter. Is this normal pricing? it seems pricey. I have seen a few OEM oil change kits online for $70 but want to make sure it would be the OEM stuff needed.

That's super expensive. I had the dealer do an oil change after I bought the car and it was in for warranty work and it was like $110 or $150 or something like that. These don't require the super expensive oil the e9x did.

That's an absurd price. Oil should be $8-9 per liter and the filter around $20. If you have access to a lift or ramps it's a super easy 30min DIY.

That is what I want to do. Where can I purchase the oil at a normal price? Should I just shop another dealer?

In order to loosen and remove the oil filter housing cap, you'll need a tool that fits over the cap. There's a bunch of cheaper ones on Amazon and elsewhere, some made of pressed sheet metal, but this one from Burger Motorsports, made out of billet aluminum, is the absolute best. The description says that it can be used with a 27mm socket, but it's really 21mm (click pic for link):

What car ramps do you guys use?

I only have a jack but obviously when I jack the car up I can't put a jack stand there...

Is changing the oil using car ramps advisable? Or will there be residual oil left in the engine due to the angle of the car?

I use race ramps. They are made for lower vehicles so the M3 has no problem rolling up the ramp. No issue at all with changing the oil on ramps (I have done it many times with my F80 and prior M cars).

For just an oil change, I use Race Ramps, although I bought the QuickJacks earlier this year when Costco had them on sale for $999. They are the best overall solution, allowing you do anything you need to do under the car and have all four wheels off the ground.

Any residual oil left over because of the angle when on RaceRamps is negligible. I wouldn't worry about it.
