Is there an easy way to see what bootloader version is on the car?

Not that I am aware of. If the car was manufactured after April/May 2019 or has been to the dealer for any service since approximately that time though you will almost certainly have a bootloader that needs to be backdated.

So, we would have to re-flash every time after service visits? Or, can we request they skip plugging in?

You would need to request that your DME not be updated when taking the car into the dealership. If updated, back to a newer bootloader the process would need to start over again.

You can check your ISTEP level in VCM in esys. For example, If your car has an updated bootloader, it will be on 19-03-5xx or higher.

For example:

4.14.3x-4.15.3x ISTA (and Pszdata) = 18-11-551 ISTEP (old bootloader).
4.16.10 ISTA (and Pszdata) = 19-03-522 ISTEP (updated bootloader).

See the included version/i-level chart for reference:

Obviously, for those local - we can check for you on the spot. If taking the car in for service, ask your SA that they do not update the vehicle at this time.

Matrix Integrated in Portland would be your primary source in the area.

End result would be the same on a CP car as a non-CP. The baseline on a CP car would be slightly higher however.

One more question.

Is stage 1 compatible with CA 91 fuel. Any issues with daily driving?

Thanks

Stage 1 has a 91 mapping as well. The full gamut of graphs inclusive of the Stage 1 -91 Octane map can be found at https://www.dropbox.com/s/ak1jsw4z82...Wheel.pdf?dl=0.

If the DME is sent back for backdating are there any negative effects? Were there any updates in the updated BMW DME's that were improvements or bug fixes that get lost when things are backdated?

The backdating is localized to the bootloader itself and does not touch any of the programming or coding so the car will have the same updates and patches it had pre-flash.

Seems like a lot of work just to get a small bump in HP and retain warranty. I hope some of you guys who flash can get some real world results and report back. My wallet is ready! haha.

Contact Pete or Logan at Matrix Integrated or Sean at BMW Portland (or service dept) either is an excellent choice.

I have DINAN S2, installed in the spring. (S1 was last year) can I upgrade to this, or should I? Is there a benefit? I race a Formula Continental now, so my F80 Competition feels slow.

Potentially, assuming the crank hub failure can't be traced back to some other cause such as a money shift.
I would screenshot or save this comment if anyone is considering this, given the of spun hubs we've seen 😂

Am I wrong here or is this no where near being worth it ?!?

Cheers!

I think there is a bit of confusion here in general.

You are stating pricing for Stage 1 tuning but then referencing the HE tune which is different pricing and a separate thing altogether.

Dinan + & Dinan +HE are the warrantied units for the larger amount (i think forum rules still don't let me state a price). They are geared for 91/93 octane with the only difference being one required the heat exchanger for more power since it combats the de-rating issue.

Stage 1 is inclusive of both of those files (Dinan +, Dinan +HE) but also gives you access to all the other octane mappings (although it will require a dealer visit to switch), does not carry the factory matching warranty and is roughly half the price. The stage 1 maps do not require the HE but consistent pulls will be hard as you will be facing de-rate problems.

A simple quick reference guide for the options can be found at bit.ly/S55-FlashGuide. That may help.

That said, just in terms of numbers... You will not get an argument from me about Dinan + being a bit anemic. That was simply what calibration found to be the max power allowed without seeing the car fighting back and de-rating itself. The good news is there is no additional charge from Dinan to "upgrade" to Dinan +HE when the charge cooling is upgraded. The numbers you stated earlier are technically correct if you are looking strictly at peak gains. Keep in mind though that those peak gains occur at 7000 RPM. Perhaps your different but most will be spending most of their time in the mid-range where there are +50-+70 WHP gains. Dinan's main goal in tuning is to provide a linear power delivery and not a peaky one where the upper RPM range just dies on itself which is partly the reason for the limited peak gains as well.
Thank you for this explanation.

Benefit of the flash would be no governor and a smoother linear power band if you are looking at the matching warranty variant. If you went with the stage 1 without the factory matching warranty then you would have the above plus the ability to get a healthy amount of additional power given better fuel with the more aggressive fueling maps.

Non-M variants (N55, B58, etc) are in the works but have not been released. Pricing has not been determined on those platforms. Those will also ultimately have 2 flavors (warrantied and unwarranted). N55 tunes are most likely next Dinan flash releases since they are so closely related to the S55.

My bad. I just assumed we were comparing like products.

The only other 2 warranted tunes that I am aware of are $50 cheaper and significantly more expensive then the variant you reference. Major difference between the alternatives and Dinan however is the wide geographic coverage for support via a dealer network.

The limited warranty tune is a bit more expensive then most competition but nowhere near a 3x multiple (Actually 1.13 -1.29x for the vast majority of the marketplace).

This is what kinda sells me on it. If I have my local Dinan authorized bmw dealership flash me and something goes wrong I can just bring it right back and I'll be covered without having to un modify the car or be sketchy about a warranty fix.

Curious if it'll be worth doing on the N55 M2 since our engines don't have a lot of headroom to work with. Looking forward to the release none the less.
