Parky,
As some time has gone by, are you still just as happy with the setup? Has the tone changed at all with some more miles on it? Thx! Rm

Few days ago, I put the valve flap controller back because many people asked me about it. With valve flap closed and gas coming out from main muffler, sound is slightly deeper than stock configuration during cold start. Sound is pretty muted during regular driving due to closed valve. I still don't like sound coming out from that rear muffler. It's like BMW purposely built rear muffler sound like crap to make people purchase performance exhaust. I will be disabling valve flap later to bring back that mean/aggressive exhaust sound across all RPM. Not so much problem with drone either with valve flap disabled. Only time I get minor drone is when I am driving very low rpm on 7th gear (1.8k - 2k rpm) or going uphill on 7th gear. Other than that, no drone is present. |

stock e55 exhaust. mid cats deleted. CL fuel and timing map used. stock HP was about 430 at the wheels i was hitting 470 at the wheels after these 2 mods. |

How come you didn't think about removing the resonator at all before or after some of the setups?

In addition, stock resonator has cross section inside it (H-pipe?). It would require little bit more effort to replace this while retaining same exhaust flow as stock configuration. |

I am going to replace the secondary cats and resonator with Supersprint mid-pipes, and a VSC-2 valve control unit so I can route through the stock muffler if/when needed. Appreciate the thread....your setup sounds great! |

so I finally got around to doing parky's magnaflow/valve mod. I totally agree the cold start (and start in general is much better, as well as low rpm driving without much introduction of drone. the overall volume is much more to my liking now but (while its a preference thing) im still not 100% sold on the exhaust tone, especially at high rpm. like I said though, I know this is preference. for the money I think this is a great option and I really don't even mind the sound changes with the valves functional. if you are looking for an inexpensive option to get more sound while keeping the overall feel of the stock exhaust, I think this is great option.
I had been on the fence about getting in on the AA group buy, but was very hesitant before I tried this option first. I'm gonna go ahead and spend $ on a custom exhaust, but I think the investment into welding the resonators was well worth it...otherwise I would have always been wondering if my money on a system was well allocated for me. thanks again to parky for this write-up...next up im gonna address your rattle DIY's!

Having 2 resonators in the system (magnflow resonator followed by stock resonator) might be causing too much noise cancelling at top end. Last edited by parky1215; 04-17-2015 at 11:19 AM.. |

I played a lot with the exhaust of my previous car (2014 Audi S4) and basically had the same kind of thread as this one on the audizine forum. i replaced the center resonator with an x pipe like shown on the previous post and the drone never went away, i had 2 magnaflow mufflers and the drone was really bad (my car was DSG). i started with X pipe and oem mufflers. sound was ok but raspy high pitch rattle on high rpms and farting was ok. After i removed the rear mufflers and replaced with magnaflow mufflers. sound was awesome but drone was HORRIBLE! Then i replaced the regular xpipe with a resonated x pipe. drone went away and volume lowered also. then the secondary cats went away and the setup on the s4 was awesome. perfect tone, perfect farts, NO DRONE.
Here is how a resonated xpipe looks like this will do the same job as the racing mufflers + will keep the drone away. This is what i am planning to do with my F80. Secondary cat removed/straight pipes + replace the center with resonated xpipe and disable the valves. Last edited by diegom305; 05-05-2015 at 09:04 AM.. |

As for me, I am planning to remove center resonator and replace it with custom H-pipe (M performance exhaust style). |

What im looking with the resonated x pipe is to have something to control the tone. Im not fan of just open exhaust sound. The removal of the secondary cats will increase the flow and with the res pipe it will be under control and getting the refined nice tone when valves are open. Not sure when im doing it because im starting with the suspension. Doing springs and spacers shortly.

I have catless DPs on my F82 and am seriously considering replacing the secondary cats with either race mufflers like the OP did or a section of normal pipe. What is the diameter of our pipe at the secondary cat section?

Nice. I will be replacing my secondary cats with strait pipes next week, along with replacing the center resonator with an H pipe. Stock muffler with valve controller already in place. |

At least, we now know resonated x does not fit in there. I actually bought magnaflow x-crossover 2.5 inch from Amazon for $100. I am scheduled to put this in place of stock resonator next Friday. This should be narrower than your resonated x-pipe, so I don't think I will encounter fitment issue. |

I had this on my S4. This will help with flow but not with drone if you drive with valves fully open. Not sure if you do but i dont like the tone of the exhaust when is open. that is why i was killing 2 birds with 1 stone drone/tone with the res x pipe.
I think im gonna go your route with the X pipe BUT i will add racing Borla mufflers where secondary cats are. |
